Word For The Day, Thursday, December 15, 2005 - chatoyant
dictionaries ad nauseum | December 15, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 12/15/2005 4:44:16 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chatoyant • \shuh-TOY-unt\ • adjective
: having a changeable luster or color with an undulating narrow band of white light

Example sentence:
The chest was opened to reveal a veritable treasure of glittering gold jewelry and chatoyant gems.

Etymology: The complex structure of a cat's eye not only enables it to see at night but also gives it the appearance of glowing in the dark. Not surprisingly, jewels that sport a healthy luster are often compared with the feline ocular organ, so much that the term "cat's-eye" is used to refer to those gems (such as chalcedony) that give off iridescence from within. If you've brushed up on your French lately, you might notice that the French word for "cat" ("chat") provides the first four letters of "chatoyant," a word used by jewelers to describe such lustrous gems. "Chatoyant" derives from the present participle of "chatoyer," a French verb that literally means "to shine like a cat's eyes."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Stars that are truly chatoyant are found in heaven, not Hollywood.

No matter if he had equipment like one of those overly endowed porn stars, he would still look wimpy and effeminite-a girly-man.

well i guess you can be a lawyer based on aping legalese and i am guessing you two could be gynecologists as well. jacks o many trades yunz are : )

Who does a gynoecologist call in for consultations when examining Mother Nature?

Does he need a witness present when he examines big holes?

What does a gynoecologist recycle after he finishes each exam?

Does she keep her green thumb inside, or outside, the glove?

Good luck shopping!

I never did get to Michael's.......but I cleaned up in the discount bookstore. I haven't yet added up the regular retail/publisher's price of everything I bought, but if the one $24.95 book I paid only $1.67 for is any indicaton - I did pretty danged good for less than $22 (including tax) on the 2 shoppings bags I left the store with :)

Apparently I have a lot of catchin up to do here.............

Your Night Before Christmas rendition is glorious!!!!

The liberals must be having a flippin' conniption here on the Eastern Shore.........Every store we were in today, in both Maryland and Virginia, no one was afraid of wishing anyone a Merry Christmas.

We had lunch in this really neat Sports Bar/Grill and the bartender was an absolute hoot........."I will wish everyone a Merry Christmas, I pray, I celebrate Chritmas and I say the Pledge of Allegience - This is AMERICA"

But I am sure they will really be having hissy fits over the notes that have come home from school this week.....one from the teacher today about their Christmas party on Tuesday and theone from the office earlier in the week about the Food Bank box in the office that will be accepting donations until Christmas vacation.........yes, Virginia, there is Christmas in public schools in Virginia........
