It's certainly one of the most favorably reviewed movies of the year, and a major player in the best picture race at the Oscars.
But 'Brokeback Mountain' isn't the easiest sell to audiences unaccustomed to films that deal frankly with same sex relationships: even at a recent screening in Los Angeles' liberal Westside, some moviegoers broke into inappropriate (but no doubt tension relieving) laughter at a scene in which the wife of taciturn cowboy (Heath Ledger) catches her husband in a passionate embrace with Jack Twist. (Jake Gyllenhall)
Perhaps to remind viewers (and voters) that there is more to director Ang Lee's film than it's wretching portrait of a gay relationship, a new 'for your consideration' ad appeared in today's Hollywood trade papers.
Where most of the ads to date have pictured Ledger and Gyllenhall, this one covers all the bases by going for a distinctly familiar and thoroughly heterosexual image: Jack Twist and his wife Lauren (Anne Hathaway) holding their newborn baby.
In other words, Brokeback Mountain may be the gay cowboy movie, but it's not just the gay cowboy movie.

Those are hilarious, I have to admit.
"It taints her other work."
What other work? Like Havoc? Or the one where she's a princess? Horrible stuff.
I'm sure he meant "wrenching", the wretch.
Seriously, do you really think that there is anyone in the USA who has $8.50 to spend on a stupid movie who doesn't realize this is a gay cowboy movie?
that is prieceless
Uh, what does that link do? It didn't do anything when I cliked on it.......
"Love-making"?????
You mean "buggering"? "Fudge-packing"? "Pickle-smooching"?
More like "Homo on the Range!"
As predicted. They pull this shtick all the time.
Gay 'sheepherders' sounds too gay.
There's apparently a lot of "schtick pulling" in this movie.
And are vey flexible....
They are not really cowboys, they are shephards.
If I got so suckered (no pun intended) and I won't, I would be at the manager's office demanding a complete refund.
Interesting how the Left ignores the cynical marketing here. The movie could have starred two gay actors, but obviously far less attention would have been garnered. Instead, they try something subversive. Hire two popular male actors and have them pretend to be gay...and that will get you a whole LOT more attention. Will it bring in a whole LOT more money?...probably not since they happened to have budgeted the movie at about 12 million. They know themselves this is a niche movie if there ever was one.
Anyway, the Left likes to equate homosexuals with blacks. Therefore, by their logic, shouldn't this movie be an example of actors appearing in blackface?
The movies fold of sheep are all lesbian ewe's.
Anyone notice a recurring theme, here? Liberals have to lie about who/what they are to get elected.
This movie has to lie about what it is to get audiences.
Worst of all - consider the family with small children that might believe the false advertising and take their kids to see a "cowboy movie".
Whatever became of truth in advertising?
I guiess it doesn't apply when the studio is trying to pull a fast one and cook the numbers.
Warn your friends; warn your neighbors.
Lol, ever after his role in 'Deliverece,' Ned Beatty still takes baths and shower in his underwear.
