The Straight Side of Brokeback Mountain (Alert: Studio Issues 'Hetero Friendly' Ads to Fool Viewers)
Oscarbeat ^ | 12.23.05 | Steve Pond

It's certainly one of the most favorably reviewed movies of the year, and a major player in the best picture race at the Oscars.

But 'Brokeback Mountain' isn't the easiest sell to audiences unaccustomed to films that deal frankly with same sex relationships: even at a recent screening in Los Angeles' liberal Westside, some moviegoers broke into inappropriate (but no doubt tension relieving) laughter at a scene in which the wife of taciturn cowboy (Heath Ledger) catches her husband in a passionate embrace with Jack Twist. (Jake Gyllenhall)

Perhaps to remind viewers (and voters) that there is more to director Ang Lee's film than it's wretching portrait of a gay relationship, a new 'for your consideration' ad appeared in today's Hollywood trade papers.

Where most of the ads to date have pictured Ledger and Gyllenhall, this one covers all the bases by going for a distinctly familiar and thoroughly heterosexual image: Jack Twist and his wife Lauren (Anne Hathaway) holding their newborn baby.

In other words, Brokeback Mountain may be the gay cowboy movie, but it's not just the gay cowboy movie.

Heard a review of this last evening and saw clips of the love-making scenes. I hope they have barf bags at the theaters.

That's really the ad? That's hilarious! These people are beyond parody. This flick is getting laughed off the screen, and this is their response? They may be fooling themselves, but they sure as heck aren't fooling anybody else.

I've got to see it now, just to see how bad it really is, but I'll wait to see it for free, because I may only last about 5 minutes.

Bare-back mountain is a movie about betrayal. The target audience is women, who after seeing this movie will be taking that $200 fishing rod they bought thier husbands back to the Sports Authority. The movie is being critically acclaimed because they are gay cowboys. The Bird Cage didn't get this push because Nathan Lane and Mork didn't kiss.

Here in Wyoming we have lots of barbwire. I just can't understand why we did not use it.

My understanding is that Alexander the Great, which should have been a great historical saga but which was instead a pathetic triple xxx gay flick never made back even close to its production costs in the box office.

I hope the American market place deals the producers of this travesty a similar lesson in the economics of perversion.

Hollywood worships the liberal/gay agenda but they worship money even more.

"A more truthful title would have been:

"Even Cowboys Get the Blows"

with apologies to Tom Robbins for "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues""

I think PJ-Comix calls it "Bareback Mountain."

Is that really how it appears on the site?

Sheesh, they misused an apostrophe AND misspelled "retch-provoking". ;D

I agree.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the gay lifestyle, this ad is extremely deceptive.

Perhaps a better ad would be a picture of the two main actors kissing.

Let's see how many newspapers would accept an ad like that in their movie sections. Not many, I suspect.

Maybe they misspelled "wrenching."

It's pretty common to issue ads that disguise a movie's content, when "normal" people would not pay if they knew the real plot.

"Withnail and I" is an example. Supposed to be the story of two young roommates, but a lot of the movie is them coming to grips with a homosexual uncle with designs on one of the roommates, and their own feelings for each other.

Surprisingly, so was the advertising for "Babar", there was no hint in the ads for this kid cartoon movie that 80% of the movie was violent warfare between the elephants and the rhinos (or hippos or whatever).

"Toy Story" ads focused on the cute toys. the movie had lots of footage about a twisted kid who made bizarre surrealist monsters by mangling his toys.

So it's no surprise that Brokeback Mountain would advertise using a cute, heartwarming hetero image.

And WHY call them cowboys? Probably because homosexuals would not flock to a movie about shepherds- sounds too religious at Christmastime, don't it?

Know the difference between a cowboy from Texas and a cowboy from Montana?

Cowboys from Texas have $h!t on their boots

Cowboys from Montana have wool stuck in their zippers

Reason why it won't play well in Texas!

1. Because Billy Bob wrote Charlene on the water tower, not Bubba!

Yeah, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. I don't feel like Million Dollar Baby ever tried to mislead anyone. If you saw the trailer and thought you were going to see a Rocky movie we saw a different trailer. If nothing else Clint Eastwood's involvement would have to tell you it was going to have some dark and sad themes.

Brokeback Mountain's trailer on the other hand looks like a parody of romantic movies. It seriously looks to me like Ang Lee made a movie ready made for Mystery Science Theatre 3000. But because it is about gay people, it has to be praised as the greatest movie of all time. And they can brag on it all they want, Batman Begins still got better reviews. Now there is a movie I would love to see take home the best movie award at the Oscars. And of the movies I have seen this year, it would be the front runner for me.

I read where this "blockbuster" garnered a whopping $515,000 in it's release

When Letterman mentioned this amount last night Paul Schaffer said "I've got that much in my wallet."

Maybe the moviegoers should be sentenced to prison, for failure to treat the subject with the REVERENCE AND AWE it deserves.

Or maybe the moviemakers should realize that whenever an audience laughs, it's because something strikes them as humorous.

If they weren't striving for humor, that's not the audience's fault.
