It's certainly one of the most favorably reviewed movies of the year, and a major player in the best picture race at the Oscars.
But 'Brokeback Mountain' isn't the easiest sell to audiences unaccustomed to films that deal frankly with same sex relationships: even at a recent screening in Los Angeles' liberal Westside, some moviegoers broke into inappropriate (but no doubt tension relieving) laughter at a scene in which the wife of taciturn cowboy (Heath Ledger) catches her husband in a passionate embrace with Jack Twist. (Jake Gyllenhall)
Perhaps to remind viewers (and voters) that there is more to director Ang Lee's film than it's wretching portrait of a gay relationship, a new 'for your consideration' ad appeared in today's Hollywood trade papers.
Where most of the ads to date have pictured Ledger and Gyllenhall, this one covers all the bases by going for a distinctly familiar and thoroughly heterosexual image: Jack Twist and his wife Lauren (Anne Hathaway) holding their newborn baby.
In other words, Brokeback Mountain may be the gay cowboy movie, but it's not just the gay cowboy movie.

yea, I read where this "blockbuster" garnered a whopping $515,000 in it's release..
as I saw on another post, this movie will do well in LA, SFran and NY, but betcha it don't play in Peoria..
Gay cowboys eating pudding.
something for everyone - fantastic
Would they stop calling danged sheepherders "cowboys," already?
No effing way. Total propaganda. Leni Reifenstahl lives.
That first sentence says it all - Now they'll just have a couple of ceremonies where they pat each other on the back, recycle meaningless 'Awards' and entertain millions of mindless robots who actually tune in to watch this nonsense.
If it wins an oscar, will it be for Best Actor in a Suppository Role?..............
Isn't GLAAD and the gay groups going to get up in arms now because the studio is running from the homo themes in the movie?
A more truthful title would have been:
"Even Cowboys Get the Blows"
with apologies to Tom Robbins for "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues"
those suckered into seeing the movie based on that deceptive ad will walk away very angry. Defiled, but angry.
Would somebody explain to me why two male shepherds would have sex with each other when the job comes with a built-in harem? And remember, sheep never tell....
Oh great, now it will sucker in people because the "Princess Diaries" chick is in it.
Broke Back-Mountin'...........
The correct term is goat-ropers.
Excellent!
2 hours and 20 minutes of a gay comboy movie? No wonder the studio isn't releasing it wide until late January and most of the balloting is already in.
This same thinking might explain Ledger's next movie role: Casanova. Perhaps he's hoping that playing a womanizer will erase the image of him as a rump-ranger.
(And on a side note: Why wasn't Jake Gyllenhall nominated for best actress by the Golden Globes? After all, Heath Ledger was nominated for best actor. It seem only fitting that his leading lady get a nod.)
