The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I don't know if it's that big a pain. We'd have to find male people to help us move the furniture, and... yeah, if there's another way, I'd rather not move.

Seems to me they could just evict them for continually violating the quiet hours policy.

True enough... I wondered if you complained and demanded a new unit, if the manager might rather take action against the other guy.

We were here first! This dude just moved in. And moving is a MAJOR hassle. Would NOT want to do that.

Judging from the door banging I heard in the wee hours, I don't think we're the only ones who are a little peeved at this guy. Most of the folks in the building are families or working adults. Not the sort who are likely to just pardon a college age creep for being utterly inconsiderate, I don't think.

So maybe I'm not the only one considering the options.

They could.... question is will they.... and it's easier to talk about evicting someone than it is to actually do it. The laws are all written to protect tenants.

I think, and I should have been on this before, that we should start reporting this guy, even the day after, to the apartment people. If they would evict him, it's probably a long process and needs lots of documentation. A history of complaints would help.

You're probably right. I wish I had their number...but I guess I can walk over and compain.

Do you know what apartment number that is, by any chance?

My 2 cents...

First of all, do not try to confront him yourself.

My first step would be to talk to the building manager/supervisor. If nobody is complaining to them, and are only trying to handle it themselves, the management may not even be aware there is a problem.

If the management seems unwilling or unable to do anything, then and only then would I try to get the cops involved.

Sneak up and look, it should be on the door.

Well...I went over to the office. The lady there said if there's another disturbance, I can call the on-call maintenance person, who will stop and put a note on their door. Well...that'll help...how?

I'm assuming it would also be annotated somewhere, though. So there's that. But she said there isn't anything they can do about a complaint without being able to verify that I'm telling the truth. I guess that makes sense, though it stings a bit.

Hopefully someone else complains, too. Then I won't sound like a hypersensitive kook.

Did you get the number for maintenance?

I think getting some of the other residents to complain would be good. Check with the girl across the hall this afternoon. She is nice and knows about Mr. Beepy, she might be willing to complain.

I got the office number...apparently it goes to the on-call person after hours. Catch is that they have to get up and get over here, and there's always the chance the guy will have stopped by the time they get here. Maybe.

When he moved in, he managed to leave some sort of alarm beeping in his apartment for, like, hours. We called maintenance. So his nickname is Mr. Beepy.

The night he moved in, he went out for the evening and left some device beeping and beeping. Loudly, too - you could hear it all the way across the parking lot.

I finally left and went to a coffee house for a few hours, 'cause it was driving me nuts - noises really bother me. Jen eventually called maintenance and they came over, but it was just as the guy got home and turned whateveritwas off. Henceforth, he's been known (by Jen and me) as Mr. Beepy.

Whateveritwas beeped again for a long time about a week ago. Not sure what it is...it's too slow a beep for an alarm clock, I think.

Ah - That happened to Elaine on Seinfeld... The neighbor went away on vacation and their alarm kept going off. She shorted out a plug in the hall outside the neighbor's apt and cut the power to it... But then that cut the power to the automatic feeder for the cat... and the cat started meowing...

</life according to Seinfeld>

Call the police and tell them there is a strong obnoxious chemical smell that's been coming out of there. Strong smell like paint thinner or solvents. Make sure you mention the solvents... oh... and cars coming and going at all hours.

Heh...Seinfeld cracks me up. I haven't seen that episode, but I can totally picture it!

Hm...I bet you can get Seinfeld episodes from Netflix...
