The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It smells lovely - it's in the oven now. Kind of a funky color on account of I had to use red wine, but I think it'll taste good regardless...

I added some onions, too. Hope that works!

Port wine (also porto wine) is sweet, fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern part of Portugal; it takes its name from the city of Oporto, the centre of port export and trading. Port has been made in Portugal since the mid 15th Century. Port became very popular in England after the Methuen Treaty of 1703, when merchants were permitted to import it at a low duty, while war with France deprived English wine drinkers of French wine.

I looked up sherry, and the dictionary definition of that also says "fortified wine", but from Spain.

But what on earth is "fortified wine"?

Um....and I believe they should re-think that fire station location. ;-)

Unless they are going to store all the sandbags in the county there :~D

Hey 2J, if your cholesterol medicine needs to be a high alcohol content, then fortified wines may be the way to go! Might be kinda spendy, though. ;o(

OK, so we went and got a rental car 'cause our car needs some work and I didn't trust it to make the drive. We were late, of course, but not *too* late for lunch!

Oh, here's a funny restaurant sign we saw in Johnson City, on the way to Fredericksburg...

So we got to Fredericksburg and met the happy couple outside of the Peach Tree Gift Gallery and Tea Room...

The One Ring!

After we had a nice lunch and talked a bit, Talon's sister Empress stopped by and visited...

After visiting for a couple of hours we finally parted company. We took a different route home, and during our journey we saw... a llama!

While we were pulled over looking at the llama on the other side of the road, some goats on our side of the road wandered over to see what we were doing...

A little farther up the road we saw emus, white tailed deer, and what looked like antelope... but we didn't get any pictures of them. We did get pictures of some big-horned sheep, though!

And finally, here's the funky little rental car we had. It's a Chevrolet HHR, which I had never even heard of until the rental lady offered it to us. It's kinda like a PT Cruiser, but not *quite* as cool...

And, that's it!

A co-worker and I rented a PT Cruiser when we went for training in Georgia. It was a fun car to drive, but had so-so visibility.

Was this one easy to drive?

Great pictures and travelogue! Woulda been nice to have some of you two as well, though. ;-)

Interesting little car...I don't think I've seen one of those before!

It was easy to drive, but yeah, the visibility (through the back window especially) was a little iffy. Also, for what appears to be a large vehicle, there wasn't much room inside... we both have big water mugs that we carry when we're driving, and there was no place to put them down! Very difficult to reach into the back seat, too.

I've been a passenger in a PT Cruiser. Cute car with an amazing amount of space inside...but even not driving I felt like I was in a boat with too-high sides that made it hard to see.

Also they have no ground clearance - a major issue in snow country. ;-)
