The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

and good old Sunday gospel you'd hear on the radio.

***confesses to boohooing like a baby the first time he saw a Gaither Reunion***

I grew up with those people and my dad was ~almost~ in a gospel quartet. The guy he was to replace decided not to leave after all.

Did I ever tell you I sang with a Gospel Choir? I was part of the Washington Men's Mass Choir. We sang at The Kennedy Center, and *cough* Jesse Jackson was the MC.

150 voices. I was one of ~two~ white guys.

Oh, Ramius, you're missing a true phenomenon!

Let me introduce you to Cowboy Troy ... the self-described "world's only six-foot-five black rapping cowboy." Put on your earphones, click to listen in the upper left hand corner of the screen, and try the first two songs. The second one will surprise you.

Cross my heart ... I have a fertile imagination, but I could NOT make up Cowboy Troy.

However, I am going to use the prototype as a hero in a future novel ...!

Hm...yarn enough to finish this latticework afghan, or food for the cats?

'Tis a difficult choice.

G'mornin' Rose! I'm just lurkin here but when I saw your posts on all the good old singers you were mentioning I just had to throw in my 2cents worth. I love all the old Motown stuff too, but my favorite was Barry White. Now THAT man could SING! He still gives me chills.

Now that is an interesting different. The second songs me of some J-pop groups that combine a rapping guy with a woman singer and an actual band (not like hip-hop). It is an interesting combo that I am starting to dig.

As for Johnny Cash, he was the archetype of gangsta country:

When I was just a baby,
My mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns!"
But I shot a man in Reno
Just to watch him die.

And:

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down but, to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

Johnny Cash was an O.G. (original gangsta) before the concept was invented. Is there a more evocative line in country music than "But I busted a chair right across his teeth/And we crashed through the wall and into the street/Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer?"

We used to watch that show when I was little, but somehow I really don't recall that particular character.

Guess my brain forgot it in self-defense. Eek!

Billy Eckstine is a smooth customer, isn't he?

That voice is like some creamy liqueur, isn't it?

Most excellent, Rose!

I think I spotted him on one of those music award shows last year. Am I right?

Now, don't be knocking Cowboy Curtis. Alyson just ~adores~ him.

Yes, I'm a bad mom. My kids have DVDs of PeeWee's Playhouse. ;-)

It was a great TV show!

I've listened to it a number of times already.

Can't grow tired of that voice, no. Such a romantic era....

Didn't Annie Lennox do something for LotR? Or am I totally wrong?

Whitney Houston I've heard, Frank Sinatra of course but I'm just not much of a fan. Most of the others I vaguely know but not enough to be familiar with.
