The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I guess it's silly to talk like this, huh? ;-) But in any case, what sane woman would want a guy that brags about having as many partners as he claims to have had, says he isn't ready for committment, and who constantly rags on how women in their late teens are the most attractive and no guy in his right mind would look at anything else? Um...yeah, wot a prize 'e is...

There's an interesting study to be made of online personae. The anonymity of the internet has a lubricating effect on the psyche, like alcohol.

You learn alot about somebody by getting them drunk. You find out who's in there lurking behind the better judgment. Kinda scary sometimes. I don't, for example, trust somebody that refuses to have a drink if we're talking business after hours (assuming the situation is appropriate). He's already learned that he can't trust himself after a drink, and I interpret that to mean I shouldn't either, sober or not. The untrustworthy guy is lurking under the surface somewhere.

The internet too... lets people be anonymous for a little while and sometimes they become somebody very different. Like SHOUTINGMAN at the bar. Nice quiet reserved guy normally, but get a few beers in 'im and you gotta nail down the furniture. You learn a lot about people by seeing who they are when they think they are anonymous. It's the same as that old saying that "character is who you are when nobody is looking".

And even more frightening, is that the internet allows you to pretend to be someone entirely different.

A guy pretending to be a girl, etc.

You know, that's why I've always liked the Hobbit Hole. We were all WYSIWYGs, even when we had never 'seen' each other!
