The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

And what a bless for us that young American men, in this sad and sorry Politically Correct age, will still do such things on our behalf.

It will be a job convincing you NOT to do it next year. ;o)

I think it's already too late. The reality is that, as difficult as it can be, we know that's where we belong. I told some of the guys in the cast that, as long as we're gonna be miserable, I wouldn't wanna be miserable with anyone else (in RL anyway).

But glad you enjoyed it.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. If every year is as well produced, it would be fun to do!

Evening Rose, excellent write up you have there. (Even though I don't understand any of the terms except Excell)

Good luck on the interview.

Got this very nice email yesterday from a Marine staff sergeant who requested a Hobbit Hole knife that somehow snowballed into 150+ knives. No comment about his mention of elves, though. :)

-------------

First let me thank you and all your Hobbit Hole Elves who have helped, and have continued to help, Marines and Soldiers with your much needed time and effort. It it somewhat sad that it takes American Citizens to come to the aid of it's service members with items that should have been purchased, issued and disseminated by the military. Thank you.

Secondly, I have to appologize for the miscommunication or misunderstanding. Somewhere between our e-mail correspondence the number of knives requested somehow got misconstrued. I appologize for any mass confusion but I simply was requesting a knife for myself (Gerber). Or any other that would not be so costly to your organization. I don't know how my request got to be more than the one knife requested, but I wouldn't dare take away something from someone else. (There is a reason why they give grunt Marines a rifle and not a computer, Jarheads got to stick to what we do so well!)

No doubt the error is on my part and it's to be expected considering I don't use computers very much. I know that you probably receive hundreds of requests for knives that you would like and do fill, so please... disregard what has been misconstrued and I am only requesting one knife. And if the cost for shipping is an issue, please let me know and I can pay for the item myself. I know that everything you donate is from contributions and there is no money make on the part of your organization. Again, thank you for your time, patience, honesty, and support.

-----

His honesty was rewarded with the last Gerber I currently have on hand, mailed to him today.
