The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It's good practice for those among us who aspire to motherhood ;~D

I'm told that there's a lot about motherhood that is unsanitary :~D

I'm not sure if *any* of it is sanitary. Anyway, you can't scare me with motherhood horror stories, I remember my little brothers as babies.

Childbirth, on the other hand, sounds like it's just got to be some sort of elaborate joke. Surely you show up at the hospital the first time and they say "You didn't really believe that's how babies get out, did you?" and you all have a nice laugh...

Of course, that's also what I said when I learned about where babies came from in the first place... seemed like a really strange design to me... but heck, I was 11, what did I know?

Yeah - I'm not buyin' that one either... I mean... I've never seen a stork big enough to carry that much weight.

It can be a pleasant experience thanks to epidural intervention.

Becky's birth was a miserable time for everyone, but Aly's was quick, easy and virtually painless.

Hehehe, epidurals sound like wonderful things to me. Did you have Becky "natural childbirth"?

A guy called me Friday from out of the blue to talk about a job, and today he actually set up an interview for me. It's a short-term contract, but would wonderfully enhance my current programming skills.

This is how the contractor guy described me to the prospective client:

We would like to recommend Rose in RoseBear for your open position. Rose comes from more of a technical background. She has worked extensively with both MS Access and Excel, and has been self-employed as a Database Architect for more than five years. She is capable of writing macros in SQL and VBA, and extracting data from Access to Excel. Her experience with SAS has given her statistical analysis experience as well. Rose's educational background includes a BS in Computing and Informational Sciences. She is available to interview and start immediately.

<bemused> Don't I sound slick?

Whoa! Look at all those TLAs and buzzwords!

I'd certainly hire you. Good luck!

True, it did. Which led to a successful experiment in a stick-shift, involving diagonal foot placement.

More difficult to learn, but still possible. Included supplemental hand-braking.

Yeah. Well, I tried. Fell into the trap of wanting to "tough it out" like mothers before me had done.

Forget it, sis.

It was twelve looong hours of back labor and towards the halfway point, the doctor insisted I have some Demerol injected so I could pass out between contractions. Otherwise, you're too tired to push when the time comes.

By the time Becky came into the world, I just wanted to curl up and go to sleep and didn't want anything to do with her until later that night.

I regret it too, knowing how it could have been.

Some folks are able to just pop 'em out like toast though, so you never know.
