UPDATE
First off, I would like to thank everyone who offered advice. I never expected this post to crack the 50 reply mark, let alone 100.
I tried the MTA police via phone and the Nassau County police in person. Both gave the impression that I was bothering them. In fact the Nassau Co. Desk Sgt even said "So, what do you want me to do about it?"
So then against the advice of many here (and my better judgment), this past Wednesday, I posted a very generic flyer on the side of the pay phone where I found the money. It stated: "Found something at the base of this phone on Friday 12/9/05. If you are the rightful owner please describe what you lost and give the approximate time you lost it." I then gave my cell phone number. Though like someone here said when you lose money you could have lost it in one of a hundred different places. So I guess the odds are low that the rightful owner will ever see this flyer.
In what may be the biggest surprise thus far no one has called at all.
Thanks again,
Chris

I guess the person who lost it had no idea where the money was dropped or maybe they went back there before you posted the notice. I am truly surprised no one has called with a fishing expedition, so to speak. LOL

If I saw that note, I would prank call you. There are just too many things to report missing....starting with my dignity and my long lost virginity.

Glad you did the right thing. A generic ad like that could probably be posted for free in the Lost and Found section for FREE (usually).....if you think you need to go even further....

Hopefully you won't get crank calls late at night or the same rolled over on your voice mail.
On a side note, there is a building craze in Texas for new High Tech Police Stations. High Tech means that you cannot step foot inside a station unless you are under arrest and in custody.

In what may be the biggest surprise thus far no one has called at all. In my experience, posting 'found' notices does sometimes get you some odd contacts with interesting people!
When we took a lost dog home last Christmas Eve, we posted an ad in the paper describing the dog... large black lab mix with a white chest, white feet and white on his face. We only got one call, from a woman who sounded increasingly kooky the longer the call went on... She said... "Well, our dog is all black and doesn't have that much white on him, but my daughter likes to dye him different colors, so it might be our dog..."
HUH? Lets just set aside the fact that the daughter dyes the dog in the first place.... How do you dye a black dog different colors, and how do you dye white onto a dog?
Between that, and the odd obscene name she said they had for the dog, and we knew one thing... this dog was not going to go to her...
He's the one sitting upright below :~D
