Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 12/07/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

malversation \mal-ver-SAY-shun\ noun

1. misbehavior and especially corruption in an office, trust, or commission *
2. corrupt administration

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
The governor was finally convicted of malversation, after years of rumors about kickbacks and illegal contracts.

Did you know?
The form "mal-" is often a bad sign in a word, and "malversation" is no exception. In Middle French, "mal-" (meaning "bad," from the Latin word for "bad," "malus") teamed up with "verser" ("to turn, handle," from the Latin verb "vertere," "to turn ") to create "malverser," a verb meaning "to be corrupt." This in turn led to "malversation," which was adopted by English speakers in the mid-16th century. Some other "mal-" descendants are "maladroit" ("inept"), "malcontent" ("discontented"), and "maltreat" ("to treat badly").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

For some reason, the extra plusses just aren't as much fun as x's XXX's.

If two democrats are lying (er, talking) to each other, is it always a case of malversation?

Or conversation?

Now, if a mad lawyer and her upset client are reviewing a case in prison, that's clearly a case for mal-con-con-con-versation.

i got a real good laugh out of the last line of this letter to the editor this morning:

Politically correct erase references to Christmas

For most of us it's still Christmas, the middle of the year's biggest shopping season. We see terms like holiday cards, holiday shopping, even holiday trees. If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny. Let's not offend the few who don't like the word "Christmas."

All of the stores, newspapers and TV are bending over backwards to be politically correct. We have taken God from our lives because of a few radicals. Now they are taking Christ out of Christmas. Walk around the Christiana Mall and count the number of times the word "Christmas" is seen. Where are the bell ringers, the mangers, carolers or Santa Claus?

Maybe it should change its name to Holidaiana Mall.
