'Goals Gone Wild' Headline, Photo Draw Fire

POSTED: 11:13 pm EST November 29, 2005
UPDATED: 6:26 am EST November 30, 2005

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The editor of a community college newspaper is being criticized because of a front-page photo and headline, Kansas City, Mo., television station KMBC reported.

The Nov. 16 issue of the Johnson County (Kan.) Community College newspaper featured two female soccer players showing their sports bras. The headline read, "Goals Gone Wild," and a photo caption said there were four good reasons to support the team.

Carl Heinrich, the school's athletic director, said he was shocked when he heard about the paper.

"I don't think it portrays the image of what our athletes are," Heinrich said.

"What we believe is appropriate or inappropriate is up to everybody's interpretation," said Joshua Seiden, the paper's editor in chief.

Seiden said the ladies in the picture saw the photo before it was printed and that neither of the women have complained to him about it.

Wasn't it Mia Hamm who exposed her sports bra at a moment of triumph? Didn't the world celebrate her enthusiasm? What changed?

I would think this is more appropriate in MAXIM or NATIONAL LAMPOON, that a community paper. So much for setting an example for our young daughters. Good thing soccer has become such an equalizer of respect for the kids. I went with my brother to watch his 12 year old kid play soccer. After the game, the girls took off their dirty shirts and replaced them in the middle of the field. It seemed sorta strange and I looked at him, and he rolled his eyes and said "its something they do." a new bizarre culture. I'm sure this was started by our Olympic team when they did it.

I think it's the allusion to those disgusting videos and behavior by the young women in them. It's not that the young women here are indecently dressed, heck they could jog in public in what they're wearing. It's what they're doing for the headline that accompanies the pic. How tasteless.

I could understand the uproar if they weren't wearing bras. I would also be searching frantically for the picture.

Does the "BIG" logo on the bra constitute false advertising?

Sometimes one's bigger than the other.

It was that whorish dirtbag Chastain who began this practice.

The photo is much appreciated, this article would be almost useless without a visual. It would be nice if someone could find a better image. :P

No thanks.

Chastain was supposed to be representing the USA and she and her teammates were glad to be touted again and again as role models for young women - and then she engaged in that tasteless, lower-than-low-class display.

Contemptible.

Do the bras read "BIG Johnson Soccer"?

I certainly think they crossed the line into bad taste especially for a community newspaper.

When the USA won the championship she whipped off her shirt and ran around in her bra and did interviews in her bra.

She ripped off her shirt at the end of a championship soccer match revelaing her sports bra.

She was immitating the common practice of international male soccer stars who often take off their shirts at the end of matches.

FYI..it has been a long established tradition in World Cup for teams to exchange jerseys after the game...a sign of respect, sportsmanship, and appreciation for the opponent. Women obviously couldn't do it...until the advent of the modern sports bra..which reveals absolutely nothing..indeed, it desexualizes/de-emphasizes a woman's breasts..so Chastain, to celebrate women's soccer having come of age, and also to take advantage of a huge forum and get some publicity, replecated the men's tradition...but to call it "whorish" is IMHO, waaaaay over the top...hence, "decaf"
