Second Thoughts - 11-30-05
By: William W. Lawrence 11/29/2005 Email to a friend Voice your opinion Printer-friendly Inky Regular readers of this column are almost certainly familiar with our Ink, who was The Press mascot until she died and went to Rainbow Bridge earlier this month. Inky Dog was a well-mannered pooch who never over-ate and who always conducted herself as a lady. She behaved as if she were the queen. That's the way she was treated. Those of you who have gone through the ordeal of losing a beloved pet will understand the gloom that enveloped our house. I promised myself that I would never have another dog. I did not want to go through such an ordeal again. Then, while reading our sister paper, the Daily Times on Nov. 17, I came across the popular "Pet of the Week" feature which describes pets up for adoption at the Delaware County SPCA. The article included a picture of "Pee Wee." Wow! I thought I was looking at a picture of Ink.

Congratulations - PeeWee looks great!
He just got home from the vet's after being neutered. He has to go back in ten days to have the stitches removed. We got ordered not to let him run up the stairs or to jump.
So what does he do? He leaps onto the dining room table, then dashes upstairs.
Lol. He survive, but I don't know about the rest of us.
Tell Shelley thaty Pee Wee says bark bark back.
Oh I know what you mean, the house is so quiet without a dog! Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas...
The VA brings her out of recovery, and what is she doing but her usual sproing-sproing-sproing bounding up and down on the end of the leash, like thus:
. . . that was 4 years ago. No ill effects at all, she's still competing in agility and doing fine. The neutering is much less serious surgery - in fact if he isn't in discomfort from swelling he probably doesn't even notice (and usually, especially if you had the laser surgery done, there isn't any swelling at all.)
Thanks for the info. I was a bit worried about if he were going to be in pain.
It's a very straightforward operation. It being a tailgate procedure, the vet didn't have his electrocautery device so there was a good deal of swelling the next day. But despite the swelling the dog did not seem to be in pain (no panting, whining, or other signs of distress) and was as cheerful and friendly as ever. He was getting a regular though very mild dose of doggie painkiller for his hips, so maybe that helped, but I really don't think he was in pain. And that is a worst case - your dog had the benefit of a hospital environment and either the electrocautery machine or the laser (depending on which your vet uses). In either case, little if any swelling and no pain to speak of.
I think we mostly just suffer sympathy pangs on their behalf (especially the guys . . . )
re you trying to make me cry... at work?
You'll never replace him, but the hole in your heart and your life can be filled with a new companion.
Just lost another male to kidney disease two months ago. Three and a half. Special, special boy and joy of my life.
Even our rescue Dobe is doing poorly with her arthritis and diddn't get up for dinner. She LIVES to eat. . .
2005 has been a bloody horrible year.
I'm so sorry for you. Give them both a rub and a pat.
I also lost two of my old dogs within a month of each other last year.
yup :~D
Congrats on your new Pee Wee! Hope he's a joy to your family.
Belated thanks for the pings!
Our female went from #3 to #1 dog in two months. Had a sort of identity crisis. She was now on guard; it was her responsibility to guard the perimeter.
We had two blue heelers for years that were inseperable. A few years ago one of them was killed, kicked by a horse. Anyway the one that was left, I swear she went thru a grieving period. Lost weight, became very stand offish, didn't play as much.
About a year or so after the one died, I got a puppy to guard against coyotes that were killing my chickens. It took awhile but now the blue heeler that is left can be seen following him around and even engaging in play. But, alas, she is getting pretty old, has arthritis very bad, and has become incontinent, and I think is going deaf. I'm afraid the end is near for her too:(. I'm not looking forward to decideing when, but I'd say it's close.
Becky
Feel-good bump.
