Gator Bowl picks Cardinals; Hurricanes likely foe ESPN.com news services
No. 17 Louisville accepted a bid to the Toyota Gator Bowl on Monday.
Brian Brohm Louisville QB Brian Brohm is 207-for-301, for 2,883 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2005.
However, the Cardinals will likely be without starting quarterback Brian Brohm who is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, ESPN's Joe Schad reported.
An MRI on Monday revealed a serious knee injury and details are expected to be released by the school later that day. Hunter Cantwell, a redshirt freshman walk-on, is expected to start for Louisville at Connecticut on Saturday.
Brohm was hurt on a third-quarter scramble, awkwardly rolling over his right knee as he was brought down by Syracuse's Kellen Pruitt. He lay on the turn for several minutes before being helped to the sideline.
It is expected that Louisville will face No. 10 Miami in Jacksonville on Jan. 2.
Louisville, a Big East team, gave Miami fits last year and hosts the Hurricanes early in the 2006 season.
That would spark parallels to Miami's Orange Bowl appearance two years ago, when it played Florida State -- then opened the 2004 schedule against the Seminoles. Miami is scheduled to visit Louisville on Sept. 16.
"I'd rather not do that, to be quite honest. ... I'd rather not have a game with Louisville, turn around and play Louisville again next year," Miami coach Larry Coker said.
If he could have picked where to play next, Coker would obviously grab a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, followed by a Bowl Championship Series appearance.
When you're kind of the ugly stepsister, you just go to the prom with whoever asks you. Larry Coker, on whether he has a bowl preference
Neither of those will happen -- so Coker has no real preference about which bowl takes his team.
"I just hope that we play the best team in the best bowl," Coker said Sunday. "When you're kind of the ugly stepsister, you just go to the prom with whoever asks you. ... But seriously, when things are out of your control and when you're not in control of your own destiny, you're kind of at the mercy of what's out there."
Coker expects to know by Monday if his team will join Louisville in the River City -- where Florida State and Virginia Tech play for the ACC crown on Saturday.
But Gator Bowl Association president Rick Catlett said Sunday evening that the ACC representative -- the conference runner-up, plus Miami, Boston College and Georgia Tech are all possibilities -- would not be announced until after the ACC title game.
"We're not making any final decisions until after that game," Catlett said.
"I don't guess we're excited about any bowl right now. I know I'm not and I doubt that our players are either," Coker said. "We'll just be in recovery mode. And when it's time to play, much like the Peach Bowl last year ... we'll be ready when the time comes."
The Hurricanes -- who remained ranked No. 10 in this week's AP Top 25 poll -- ended their regular season with a 25-17 victory over Virginia on Saturday. That win kept Miami in contention for a spot in the ACC title game, until Virginia Tech beat North Carolina a few hours later.
The win was nice, for certain -- but it was far from a perfect Miami performance.

Louisville will probably travel well to Jacksonville.
yeah I think they will....they need to hope that whoever their backup QB is that he can handle the Miami blitz.
Brian Brohm is out for the rest of the season. He keys the Louisville offense.....
It's too bad. It'd been a real interesting game otherwise.
I was under the impression that bowl invitations wouldn't be issued until December 4. Guess I was wrong.
I think that's the BCS.
If the other leagues have been decided, they can send out the invitations early and other bowls are allowed to send them out to get a better game, like with Fresno State and TCU going to better bowls than the usual conference champion from their conferences would usually go too.
yeah...
It will still be interesting to see if Miami is good when playing for virtually nothing.
IMO, this Miami team is at least 4 notches above Louisville. The reason Louisville looked so good last year is that they torched the Miami Defense. The Miami D is much improved this year over last.
Talk about a mismatch. Oh well this whole bowl season is going to be full of em.
Just bowls that are waiting for CCG's so they can find out whos number 1 nd 2 in each conference.
I agree. There offense this year is just a bit young otherwise they would be posibly undefeated.
It is really too bad that Louisville kid is hurt, because he was good and he made that team go. I always pull for the West Coast teams being from California, and obviously Oregon is one of the controversial situations in the BCS this year. But they lost their senior QB and leader Kellen Clemens to a broken leg about 4 games ago and he was a major part of their team. They battled to win a few close games late in the year to finish up 10-1, but they would be a much stronger bowl team if Clemens was still there at QB. The young kid they are working in there is good, but having the senior is a big deal at this time of year. Probably one of the reasons that the Fiesta Bowl will go with two-loss teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State instead of Oregon, as is being predicted by the college football media.
It'll be interesting to see where Florida and FSU wind up going.
FSU is screwed. They may end up in a dead end bowl that no one will watch, especially if they lose their Conference championship game.
As for Florida, I am not sure. They are getting more respect from everyone since they beat the crap out of FSU.
That and Ohio State v. Notre Dame will have a national audience.
Honestly, ND doesn't deserve the berth, but they will get it anyway.
I agree that on balance, the rest of the country would probably favor Ohio State versus Notre Dame. It's a more interesting game. Regarding Notre Dame deserving a BCS berth, it's hard to tell. Most of the teams in the top ten have some question marks this year.
yeah but when your best case is that you nearly beat someone, i.e. losing, that kinda kills it for me ya know? :)
Oregon should get a bid to the Fiesta, but because of Notre Dame(who shouldn't get a BcS bid because of their name), they probably won't. Not to say that Ohio State isn't deserving, but are they any more worthy than Auburn? Or Miami? How about Georgia?
Georgia is going to have 3 losses after this weekend...
I personally think OSU should get a bid along with Oregon, but I also want to see the OSU - Notre Dame matchup so ND can get their ass handed to them.
Auburn is playing great now, but they could have taken their destiny by the nuts but their FG kicker missed 5 FGs against LSU.
Miami losing to Georgia Tech killed them. And their early season loss to FSU, which wasn't that bad until they lost to GT.
This is just another arguement for the polls not to start until the 4th or 5th week of the season instead of preseason polls.
