dictionaries ad nauseum | November 17, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 11/17/2005 6:54:31 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

acumen \uh-KYOO-muhn; AK-yuh-muhn\, noun
Quickness of perception or discernment; shrewdness shown by keen insight.

Example sentence:
With Leo's rare combination of editorial acumen and business know-how, he might have become a publishing giant had he not permitted his drinking and gambling to hold him back.
--Ellis Amburn, Subterranean Kerouac: The Hidden Life of Jack Kerouac

The family store gave him a sharp business acumen -- acquired, he would say, by manning the cash register -- that few of his rivals possessed.
--David Schiff, "Who Was That Masked Composer?" [2]The Atlantic, January 2000

Etymology: Acumen comes from Latin acumen, "the sharp point of something; sharpness of understanding; cunning," from acuere, "to sharpen."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Let K = 10A + B, where A is an element of {1,2,...,9} and B is an element of {0,1,...,9}. Then K is an elemnt of {10,11,...,99}. Suppose K - (A+B) is not a multiple of 9. Then K-(A+B) = 9n + p, where n and p are integers. Thus, 10A + B -A - B = 9n + p, so 9A = 9n + p, and hence 9(A-n)=p. If A=n, then p=0, and hence K is a multiple of 9. If A<>n, then p is a multiple of 9, and thus K is a multiple of nine.

QED, K is a multiple of 9.

(The great thing about the gixmo is that it moves the symbols every time you click it, so you think that you are getting a different answer.)

Sometimes I think Senator Ben Nelson (DINO-NE) has better political acumen than half of the GOP Senators.

Trackback I was referring to the patton comment.

And as one in Illinois, Nelson seems like a conservative, because he is to the right of most of your Republicans.

Krupnikas is a Lithuanian alcholic beverage. Basically, it is grain alchol, honey, and spices. It's around 100 proof when the cooking is done. It's good as a shot or in coffee.

Sounds yummy.

I have my annual gallon of homemade Kahluha aging in the back room. It should be ready just in time for gift giving!

It's yummy. I'll have to call my uncles soon and see where they get their Everclear, I am hoping it is not WVA. They are military so maybe it is sold on base.
