Yahoo Widget for Free Republic RSS
Yahoo! & Konfabulator ^

Posted on 11/15/2005 9:38:44 AM PST by worrywart

I just found a Yahoo Widget called RSS Viewer that will let you view all the Free Republic Breaking News headlines by tapping into Free Republic's Breaking News RSS!

To use the RSS Viewer you'll need Konfabulator (Yahoo Widgets). Yahoo recently bought Konfabulator and now the program you used to have to pay for is free. You can get the free Yahoo Widgets here:

http://widgets.yahoo.com

You can get the RSS Viewer here:

http://www.widgetgallery.com/view.php?widget=35750

Once you load the RSS Viewer you click the little "i" button and change the RSS Feed to Free Republic's RSS:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/browse.rss

and instantly all the Breaking News headlines are there! To read the first few lines of the post, just hover over the headline with your mouse. To view the entire thread on FR, just click the headline and it will open in your browser.

I could easily become a widget fanatic, and what better use for a widget than to view Free Republic headlines?!

Hope some of you will enjoy this as much as I am!

Thanks for pointing that out to me Jenny!

I don't understand.

I see all of the headlines now... in the blue box on the right hand side of the page or in their own window if I click to go to the breaking news page.

You don't have to even fire up your browser to see the headlines with this Widget.

It's an independent little application that shows the Free Republic headlines at the press of a hot key.

It pops up (along with other Widgets you've chosen -- like weather radar, picture frame, analog clock, calculator, search bar, etc.) when you hit F8. But this little Widget shows you the latest FR Headlines. Then if you click on one of the headlines, it launches the browser and takes you to FR and shows the topic you're interested in.

Hope this explains better. I'd post a screenshot to show you, but the Widgets don't show up on a screen capture.

I just found another Widget that works much better than the first one I posted.

This one's called MultiNews Reader and I like it lots better!

This one lets you enter several different RSS feeds and has a much nicer "skin".

Don't know if you knew this or not, but Yahoo Mail's new beta version has a RSS feed reader that not only reads feeds, but sorts the entries from the feeds by date/time. So you can read from multiple sources (or RSS feeds from FreeRepublic) and they'll be sorted by message, not just grouped by feed source.

Rather handy.

Widgets? They have those in Mac OSX. There's no desktop as in Windows where icons clutter the screen. Instead, aliases to programs you want to run reside in a Dock at the bottom of the screen. You can customize it and install just the programs you use often there.
