Probably Gord's last decent album although I think Endless Wire had a few good moments.

To me, still his most poignant lyric:

This old airport's got me down,
It's no earthly good to me.
'cause i'm stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as i can be.
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So i'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain.

Gordon Lightfoot is one of my favorite artists. I don't know how many of his concerts I have attended, but it's many.

I like artists who sing lyrics that mean something. Al Stewart (not Rod) is the very best in that department, I think, but Lightfoot is a close second.

Not sure who I like better, Lightfoot or Chapin. It's a dying art.

Do you think it plowed into the bottom, on a wave trough?

Well, it definately hit bottom.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the sudden massive flooding of the cargo hold due to the collapse of one or more hatch covers. Before the hatch covers collapsed, flooding into the ballast tanks and tunnel through topside damage and flooding into the cargo hold through nonweathertight hatch covers caused a reduction of freeboard and a list. The hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces imposed on the hatch covers by heavy boarding seas at this reduced freeboard and with the list caused the hatch covers to collapse.

Contributing to the accident was the lack of transverse watertight bulkheads in the cargo hold and the reduction of freeboard authorized by the 1969, 1971, and 1973 amendments to the Great Lakes Load Line Regulations.NTSB Edmund Fitzgerald Accident report.

This is one of my favorite songs and I tear up every time I hear it.

But it's a beautiful song and tells a sad story so beautifully.

I'm glad the families of the victums find it comforting.
