Jarhead Movie: Yes or No?
Posted on 11/06/2005 2:32:55 PM PST by angloamerican
JARHEAD, the movie based upon Anthony Swofford's book, came out on Friday, 4 November.
Any word on whether the movie supports the War Effort or if it is another Hollywood attempt to undermine the military?
I don't want to vote with my dollars and see it if it turns out to have an agenda.
Please advise!

Is he "Democratic" or a "Democrat"?
It may sound like hairsplitting, but to say something is "democratic" implies that their actions are complementary to the definition of a democracy. It should be clear that Democrats are anything but democratic.
This is an idea that I would like to generate further discussion and hopefully, concurrence.

nothing to do with the movie, but the Netflix CEO is one of the most outspoken democratic CEOs in the state. It's the sole reason I won't do Netflix, shame too b/c it's a very local company to me.
Since they're paying for my membership, I feel no reason not to use their service. I view it as a duty - the more I use it, the more money they have to pay for shipping. Long story, but until 2008, I don't pay them a dime, though I'm restricted to two movies out at a time. (Durnit.)

I've seen it.
The movie had very little politics(unlike "Over There") but I thought it portrayed Marines as bloodthirsty, undisciplined hooligans. It did have some interesting scenes but not much that we haven't seen in "Full Metal Jacket".
On the other hand, some guys I know from ROTC enjoyed most of it.

True. I did have more of a problem with lack of discipline than anything else.
For example, there's one scene where the guys strip down and have simulated gay sex in full view of their officer while a reporter is filming them. It's stuff like this that is over the top.

Hollywoods rendition of all wars gets me hot....real wars, however, are a turnoff. My draft lottery # in '69 was 240...i celebrated, wine and crappy mexi gutter rope.I soon realized war was best seen thru a looking glass or on a screen. My brother enlisted in the army 8 months prior and was in a place known as Bon Son.he wrote me and alerted my chicken butt that war suked the big wieney of life,I agree....in any format.
To: kingu
Of course, the movie is about Gulf War I, but nothing is "about" the past, its about now.
Do you think George Clooney's looney movie about Murrows is about McCarthyism or his own animus towards the Patriot Act and the current War Effort?

How did you get that kind of deal?
though I'm restricted to two movies out at a time. (Durnit.)
I'm on the 4 at a time, but I'm also being throttled. As a result, the movies trickle in slowly like only one or two at a time every couple of days. So basically, 4 at a time or 2 at a time, it doesnt matter, we both get the same service.

you are correct to point out the two different terms.
Reed Hastings, CEO is a major "democrat" donor...
needless to say, he supports our two marxist senators also.
To: pepperhead
Interesting....
The star of "Jarhead" happens to be the star of Brokeback Mountain....A story about a couple of gay coyboys. I smell an agenda.
The gay cowboy story is up on Drudge. Apparently it is said to be Oscar material. That says it all for me.

There are some expectations of posters.
One of them being not to post useless vanity threads.
If you'd been lurking for three years as claimed, you'd know this.

I saw it last night. I wanted to see it because I recall how much thought Sam Mendes put into every scene in American Beauty- a film that I liked. The scenes in Jarhead were also well done but the story seemed to fall flat. I'd see American Beauty again. I don't think I would see this film again.

Then don't ask to be advised......
You asked, you got a reply. I don't give a damn if you don't like it or not. Stuff it.....

My friends who saw it said it wasn't that good. No fighting. Which when you go to a war movie you have some expectations.

They weren't asking to be advised about their posting ability, they were asking about the movie. Guess you missed that part.
