I guess a deal was done...a "done deal"...and Epstein is "done". (sorry, couldn't resist, putting on flame resistant gear)
Here's the story from the Boston Herald (which doesn't own part of the Red Sox).

thought we had a deal?
I told one of the RedSox faithful on here that Epstein was leaving Boston for either Tampa or Philly.
Now that LA is out there I wonder if they could be in the mix as well?
Phillies? Tampa Bay?? Dodgers??? Several jobs out there right now.
Holy Sh#t!!!!
I guess he and Darth Larry couldn't work it out. Good for him for not selling out for the $$$$. Luccino is a first class bum hole to work for. But, by losing him and Byrnes the Sox have real problems..
Can the 2006 Red Sox be as good as they were without Theo???

How the heck does a guy that young get a job as a General Manager for a MLB team ! ?
As a Yankee fan, I'm pretty stunned by this. Theo is an excellent GM, and the Sox are making a huge mistake by letting him go.
Was his letter of resignation signed, "Epstein's mother"?
I hope the Curley-Haired Boyfriend and Lawyer Larry Lucchino are ready to become the two most-hated men in Boston.
According to Boston Sports Media Watch, the Curly Haired Boyfriend, Larry Lucchino's confidant (?), Mr. Dan "Curse of the" Shaughnessy will be on (right now!) with Mike Felger. (espnboston.com online streaming)
He has also been on the Fan in NY and Mike "A Yuk On Every Page" Barnicle
(WTKK) earlier as well as Kiss 108. Meanwhile BSMW's David Scott will be
on Newsnight (NECN 8:30) to talk about Theo-gate
