7-Foot Great Dane Is World's Tallest Dog

A 3-year-old Great Dane in Sacramento, Calif., has been named the world's tallest dog by Guinness Book of World Records.

The award-winning dog, named Gibson, stands 7 feet tall when upright, according to the report.

He was officially named the planet's tallest dog Tuesday by officials with Guinness who flew to California from England to see Gibson.

Gibson's owner, Sandy Hall, said she never dreamed Gibson would turn out to be the planet's tallest dog. She said the dog is a gift.

"I've had Danes since 1981," Hall said. "I've never seen anything like this --ever."

Several neighbors in the county know about the record-holding dog, which dwarfs an average-sized golden retriever.

"I've seen him twice now, and he's a really tall dog," a neighbor said.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was when a lady was walking a GD and the dog assumed the poop position.
She ran around to the back of the dog with a plastic grocery bag and caught the bombs as they fell.

Wow!

I'm glad he got to keep his natural ear shape.

LOL!

Why is it the bigger the dog, the more of a lap dog he thinks he's supposed to be? :)

OK, that Dane is a dog I could do. I sure love his color and markings. Wonder what a mix between Cody and a Great Dane would look like? Definitely would be a giant dog!

When I was a little kid (4, 5 yrs old) my next door neighbors had a Great Dane...and he was always outside in his back yard.

If you think they are big now, imagine how they looked to a kindergardner.

I think Clifford the Big Red Dog might have something to say about that.

Danes are such sweet, beautiful dogs. The only problem with them is their incredibly short lifespan.

Ten is bad enough for most dogs, but five is just awful.

Wait a minute, so when I was a kid,

when my Great Dane named Penny, got really sick at six,

my parents didn't actually take her to a farm?

Where she was happy and free to run all day?

Yup.

"7 feet tall when upright"

Since when is "propped up on hind legs" the measure of a tall 4-footed animal?

Frankly, his pix of leaning on their shoulders don't look much different from those of Eagle Irish Wolfhounds I saw 20 years ago.

A dog's HEIGHT is measured at the WITHERS, not how they're angled up in the air or how far their nose can stretch upward.

Actually they're no "bulkier" than Danes; they are after all, greyhounds, and the terrier-like long wire hair fools you into thinking they're bigger.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting one.

Although I am sure he would eat me out of my house.

Hope he never gets horny.

Heh, heh, heh....great dirty minds think alike.:)

Just imagine if that Dane becomes a leg humper. And try introducing him to a female Great Dane for breeding. One look at Gibson and the poor female would probably set a Guiness record for fence jumping.

I loved your picture! We are going to get a dog in the next year or so (still settling in to a new area at the moment). I want a Mastiff in the worst way and my husband thinks I am crazy because they're so big.

I keep telling him, "I do all the work around the house and I'll be the one taking care of a smaller dog or a monster-sized dog - what's the difference to you?" He just scoffs because he knows I'll get my way!!! HeHe

Give your dog a rub on the chin for me - he/she is beautiful.

Get in line! I am first!

After losing my best friend Sparky, I need to wait awhile.
But my next dog WILL be a Great Dane!!

I mean if you are gonna get a dog, why fool around??
