Tennessee to Retire Manning's Number

Knoxville -- Peyton Manning returns to his alma mater this weekend for a ceremony to retire the No. 16 he wore at Tennessee.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be a special honor for me. It's a nice tribute," he said this week. "This is probably one of the biggest honors, if not the biggest honor, that I've received."

Manning is the most decorated athlete in school history, the Southeastern Conference's all-time leading passer and a high academic achiever. Last season he set a new NFL record with the Indianapolis Colts for touchdown passes with 49.

He is the second player this season to have his number retired in a new process established this year by the university. Reggie White's No. 92 was retired earlier this season.

Peyton's one of the best ever.

And Eli isn't so bad himself. I'd love to see a game between NY Giants and the IND Colts. (I can think of seeing another game between the the NY Giants and the old BAL Colts, said to be the best game ever played)

No doubt about that. He will, however, be remembered as the only,(so far), starting UT quarterback to have lost to the University of Memphis Tigers. In a Sports Illustrated article at the end of his Vol career, he was asked if there was any one game he wanted to play over. His answer was the loss to the U of M Tigers. He is hell on wheels in the NFL. Wouldn't it be something is the Colts and Giants squared off in February? Could happen.

U of Memphis inspired to conquer that day. Tenn. was still actually the better team. Didn't Eli lose to Memphis too? Can't remember, would have to google that one.

Yes, would be interesting to see Colts play the Giants one day. Guess Archie would be neutral.

< looking at 2005 schedule to see if we have Memphis this year >
I've supported the Vols because orange runs in my blood but if the offensive coordinator is allowed to return next season then the University of Tennessee will lose me and probably many other fans. A team coming into the pre-season and ranked #3 and then losing its 4th SEC game before Nov 1 is unacceptable. Looks like Vanderbilt has a shot at getting a win over UT and breaking their 20+ year losing streak against Tennessee.
Signed
Totally disgusted
P.S. great tribute to Peyton.....Go Colts!
