If we had some Arctic spell, rather than waste $600 on heat I would go get free wood, keep the fireplace going and drag a mattress some feet from the fire to stay warm at night.

It's always easy to just wear sweaters in the day, but you know if you see your breath in the house that you must use heat. I can only go so far with allowing cold.

I also can run one of those dish heaters for only $30 a month in the back part of the house in the evening when it is in the 40s outside. I forgot about doing that before.

I wouldn't mind $120 a month to keep the whole house warm, but when it starts to get over $150 and it's just me and a 4 pound guard dog in this 2300 foot house, it gets ridiculous.

Like I said...get a heated mattress pad. It's worth the investment. About $40-$90 depending on your bed size.
