It used to be a tool of the working man in the northern states, too. But after the invention of tractors and automobiles, they aren't necessary anymore.

Yes, but in parts they still have purposes. As Face pointed out, they are used in ranching.

We don't have ranching up here. Just farming. There are such things as dairy farms, but nothing like the ranches in Montana or Texas. So there isn't much of a need for horses.
