It used to be a tool of the working man in the northern states, too. But after the invention of tractors and automobiles, they aren't necessary anymore. Yes, but in parts they still have purposes. As Face pointed out, they are used in ranching.

In America, especially in the West, horses are prized for lots of things; racing, hunting, show horses, polo, rodeo and breeding. And just plain riding. Two of my favorite breeds are the Tennessee Walker and the Morgan.
But nothing can beat the mustang.

We don't have ranching up here. Just farming. There are such things as dairy farms, but nothing like the ranches in Montana or Texas. So there isn't much of a need for horses.

For some reason, though, after listening to it a few times, I just don't think it fits me. I'm not royalty, and definitely not dreaded.

Because the mustang is the only "native American" horse, it is protected, and it roams free on government land, especially in Nevada. Several years ago, three men were imprisoned for quite a few years because they had randomly shot and killed about 20 mustangs.
There are yearly adoptions for mustangs and donkeys, believe it or not.
