I like(d) Alan Parsons, I never heard of the others. I always thought Marillion was a more melodic and poetic version of Rush, at least along genre lines.

Fish was/is probably the best lyricist ever even though he's a big fat socialist. I have a quadruple live bootleg album (4 records)of one of Marillion's last shows with Fish, it's full of editorial comments by Fish to the crowd, "Reagan this, Thatcher that, socialized medicine blah, blah, blah" why do the most brilliant musicians/entertainers just not get it?

The time I spent in England was taken by finding Purple and Rainbow CD's that I couldn't find in the States.

I have seen Purple with Steve Morse twice-good show, the band is happy with him.

I have seen them with Ritchie on DVD (Come Hell or High Water) when he was unhappy. Even at his worst, he blows many away.

He's doing Medieval music now, and I'd love to see it.

I will not speak of my early times listening to him-Not sure if the Statute of Limitations has run yet :)

Dio was unbelevable with Rainbow and Sabbath

At least CC's a Republican.

Perhaps this was the underlying reason of my attraction to him ;^)

I found him attractive, even during his aquanet days.

I was under the impression he had gotten himself back on track, but looks like he still has some work to do. I hope he is able to pull himself together.

Ritchie is not far behind. Most of the "hard rockers" from Sabbath, Purple, and Zeppeliin are approching there 60's or int hem.

Jon Lord, the Keyboard from Purple retired from the band shortly after he hit 60. He is still doing solo stuff

What amazes me is how old that dude is! He was born in 1942 which makes him 63!!

Oh yes, Ronnie's been around quite a while. All the way back to the Doo-Wop days. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Vegas Kings!

Yeah, I saw Ritchie on PS tour in '85, and Morse about three years ago. Morse is good- kind of Satriani-lite with some country chops. But I have to tell you, as a guy who's been soloing for 27 years, Ritchie kicked his ass. Sad that he and the band just can't get along. I thought he was great on Come Hell or High Water. Funny how they make a video and only interview people on one side of the disagreement. I know I sound like Ritchie's PR agent here, but look how horrified the Purps were that he tossed a styrofoam cup of water out over the audience. Unbelievable disrespect for the auidence if you listen to them- THANKS FOR COOLING ME OFF if you're in the crowd. How many times have you seen a band at a festival blast a firehose out over the crowd? It was silly. I think RB is happy with his hot, talented blonde wife/collaborator Candace Knight. Shadow of the Moon is good stuff.

The rift between Ritchie and the band (Gillan)has been epic. It is too bad because they are good together, when they are together.

The bashing he took on that DVD was bad-but honestly, Ritchie's long documented arrogance (Well deserved based on his ability) didn'thelp his argument

As far as Ritchie in the Medieval mode-I think he really wants to get back to Rock. His electric background keeps coming through.

The reunion (PS) in 84 was a godsend to me as a fan.

I only count Iommi and Page as equals

The amazing thing about him is that in all interviews, he is pretty gracious to other axe men, a true gentleman.

You are right, Marillion is a superb band, except when they start going in the uncharted territory of the political movement.
I would dare to say that Marillion music genre is some were between Pink Floyd and Rush. (Rush also delves into political conundrum as well, so is Pink Floyd if you will)

Barclay James Harvest is a British band a mix between Alan Parsons Project and Marillion.
Jean Michel Jarre is one man band all Techno of French heritage with fascinating and eerie sounds transcending the realm of reality.
Most known album is "Oxigen"

As a side note, on XM Satellite Radio channel 41 and 42, you will get all the "Hair"/"Metal" Bands and some more. It is a blast!
You should try it!...it is worth it!

Here's what I find interesting. You said what you have read are the words of a "gracious" guy who's "a true gentleman". Then there's what we've all heard: he's "arrogant". Hmm..... I wonder if he isn't like me- a perfectionist who doesn't suffer fools or drunk lead singers (hello Ian) gladly.

Nice to see you giving Iommi deserved props. "Lonely is the Word" is one of the most beautiful solos ever. If you lost sight of Sabbath after Dio left, "Eternal Idol" (1987)and "Tyr" (1990) are VERY good- and Iommi had progressed massively from where he was just a few years before.

We all have our favorites. I've seen pretty much all the greats a number of times, and I personally never understood all the Blackmore hype. I never found his playing a challenge to reproduce. I think it was more the overall Purple big rock sound and the great songs that gave him his name. I saw him in '79 and was unimpressed to say the least. First song, he's completely out of tune, plays like crap, and after the song ended, he decided to show off and threw his guitar up and it got caught in the lights. While the band played, he spent the whole next song and a half tugging on it. It came crashing down, he stormed off the stage pissed off. The band kept jamming, and Ritchie eventually came out like 10 minutes later, played like shit for 4 more songs (out of tune again), then stormed off the stage for good, leaving the band standing there. One of the funniest rock moments ever. What a god!

In the 70's I found guys like Al DiMieola and Eddie VH light years ahead of Blackmore. The late 80's-90's had phenomenal technicians by the dozens. The list is long, but the most jaw dropping ahead-of-his-time playing I've ever seen was front row watching Yngwie in 1984(his 21st birthday). I've never seen anyone pick so clean, fast, and effortless. He never even glanced at his guitar once. Jimmy Page was also sucked live in '77 I might add. Very disappointing since he was my favorite at the time. Bonham stole the show.

I think a lot of it is timing-I saw Sabbath in 79 and they absolutely stunk the place up. Ozzy was pure crap. Saw Ozzy in 87 when he was clean and he was great.

Same with Aerosmith. Saw them in 79 when Perry and Tyler were in the "Toxic Twin" Stage. Garbage-almost walked out. Saw them again in 87 and they put on one hell of a show.

Blackmore and Page could both suck terribly when they were off. Blackmore's temper was legend and part of the hype.

I am not a guitarist, don't play one on TV and didn't stay in a Holiday Inn express :), so I am not really qualified to discuss the technical side of playing Guitar.

I just go with what sounds good to me. I like Blackmore when he's on his game. Something just clicks in my head.

You're right, there are so many good Guitarists these days. Saw Yngwe too-very impressive.

Witnessing "adults" discuss the relative merits of big hair metal is amusing in a way; but mostly, it sets my teeth on edge. Like those toneless toothpicks Ibanez makes.

Big hair definitely did not rock.

I have both. Good stuff.

It seemed like they worked hard to get a lead singer (Tony Martin) that had Dios big voice. They did a pretty good job.

Well here's an old rock guitar slinger (turn 50 in two days) who can't resist some comments after reading this thread. :)

Blackmore.....pretty good, but overhyped IMHO. Legendary a**hole to work with. Steve Morse is a guitar player's guitar player (my ultimate compliment to axe slingers, and a small club.....headed up by the inimitable Gary Moore).

Yngwie.......very talented, spotty live performances. Still doing it, but needs to lose about 30 pounds and definitely the Spandex. Ugh........(it's called a "mirror", Yngwie...).

If you like Yngwie's classical bent......and since someone mentioned Savatage earlier.........check out Trans Siberian Orchestra, especially "Christmas Eve and Other Stories". Beautiful AND rockin'.

Speaking of seasonal rock, get both "Merry Axemas" CD's produced some years ago by Steve Vai. Each song performed by a different, big-name guitarist. Awesome performances by Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Jeff Beck.......great stuff by others.

Hair bands? Hmmm........I actually sorta liked 'em. Cinderella got slagged here, but that little lead guitarist/lead singer of theirs (can't remember his name) was DAMNED good. Motley Crue....when they were really "on", could melt the stereo. Tesla......some great stuff. GnR.....sucked hugely. AFD was a decent freshman release, and "Welcome to the Jungle" showed huge promise for the band; promise they never lived up to afterward.

Whitesnake.....early stuff sucked, but stuff like "Still of the Night" or "Here I Go Again" (pick your version; think they did a dozen) were a lot of fun to play. VERY decent guitar work (John Sykes, I believe?).

I've been looking for some new bands to listen to, but haven't heard squat that appeals to me in a long, long time. Can't wait till the kids get tired of the overamped, 7-string-dropped-tuning crap they're being fed and NEW rock emerges.

I predict a return to more '70's style rock; some awesome rock 'n' roll came out of that decade despite the ever-present disco garbage.

Wow - I am impressed - two posts mentioning Marillion. When I tell people I am a metal head (Metallica, Megadeth, Kiss, Judas Priest, etc.) then also state Marillion - most people never heard of them. I admit I dont' like the new Marillion as much - always preferred Fish. Actually got to see him in concert here in the 'burgh a few years back on my birthday. Brother 52 tour...

Seen the Kinks, Kiss (4x), Priest, Metallica, Pink Floyd, etc all here in Pittsburgh.
