The short version is that a well-intentioned group offered to take in Katrina dogs but they were incapable of caring for them. Dogs were left in their crates for potentially weeks, exposed to the weather -- out in the open with no shade, no shelter from wind, rain, heat, cold. Up to 500 dogs at this site. Operators were arrested a day or two ago, but released on bail.
If you don't have shelter experience or experience with aggressive dogs, you MAY still be useful... Please contact me directly by posting here or by Freemail if you can go there immediately. Tell me your experience and/or what you're willing to do, and I'll see if we can put you to use.
Again, please crosspost widely!! This need is IMMEDIATE.
If you want to help with Katrina dogs -- NOW is your chance!!
I'm a big supporter of simultaneous animal and people rescue. But at some point euthenasia becomes the only humane option. Sound like that point is being reached.
Where the hell are the owners and caretakers of these animals?
This sounds like a job for the Humane Society of the United States.
Well, it sounds like it, but they only raise money, not care for animals.
Is this a Pit Bull sanctuary?
Please ping all dog-lovers immediately, regardless of what state they live in. You never know who might know someone who could go help. Ask everyone to crosspost immediately.
Thank you!
It looks like mostly pit bulls to me. I'm no expert. Gosh, it will be hard to find people willing to care for these aggressive dogs and give them a good home. Looks like the rescuer became overwhelmed by it all. Those scenes are very sobering indeed.
Dog lover bump
I tried to post it on discoweb.org but no one has even posted. I used to like this website but so many assholes have taken over.
Monetary donations or donations of basic dog supplies are still being requested.
Supplies needed include:
large crates (Vari-kennel or wire)
stainless steel food dishes
stainless steel water buckets
leashes
towels
blankets
dog beds
toys
For now, donations of cash and supplies can be sent directly to (checks payable to):
Humane Society Of North Central Arkansas
"EDNAH support"
2656 Highway 201 North
Mountain Home, AR 72653
I believe the dogs are now being cared for adequately, so they don't need any more volunteers at this moment. But that could change at any time. So if you can be available to go help if needed, please keep in touch.
They are working with representatives from several rescue groups, the HSUS, and the Arkansas Humane Society. As I learn more info, I will post it.
For now, please send any donations you can, and continue to keep these dogs in your prayers. Thank you.
Please remember this is a fluid situation. Types of experience and number of volunteers and supplies needed could change quickly. Our goal is to stabilize this area over the next week and then work to make decisions on a broader scale. Given the state of the facility this situation cant be turned around overnight. We will win this battle one day at a time.
The Sheriff has tasked "For Pits' Sake" to manage the volunteer program. They are experienced in this and have the authorization of the Baxter County Sheriff and the Humane Society of North Central Arkansas.
VOLUNTEERS
If you are interested in volunteering, Click here to send an email with the following information:
Name
Date you can arrive and how long you can stay.
Area of expertise -- veterinarian, vet tech, "difficult" dog experience, animal shelter experience (or lack thereof), etc.
We also need volunteers willing to pick up trash and clean and organize the facility so the animals can be properly cared for. Click here to send an email if you have no prior shelter experience but you are willing/able to help with general cleanup, supplies management, paperwork/administration, miscellaneous tasks. I guarantee you it will be one of the most rewarding things you have ever done!!
Please come prepared to take direction of those on site. This is a delicate situation - We cant afford to dispute among ourselves. This is going to be a stressful and confusing situation at times.
Approved volunteers will receive an email explaining airports, directions, and what to bring.
Due to the fact that incident is a criminal case and there is an ongoing investigation, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE PROPERTY UNLESS YOUR NAME IS OUR LIST. This list will be with the guard at the gate and if your name is not on the list. You will NOT get in.
