Starting today you can order a Power Macintosh G5 which will display dual processor bars inside the task manager with still only one processor on the motherboard – how does that work?

What's with apple, can't resist the urge to make everything proprietary?

Hopefully they'll stop doing this so much to their customers once the intel macs come out next year..... but I doubt it.

Controlling the design means they can ensure stability.

Don't have to. You asked about Apple creating proprietary designs. I gave you the reason they do such things: it ensures stability because Apple created the configuration, and therefore they only have to worry about their own designs and devices.

I think Halfmanhalfamazing is referring to the non standard power cord.

No, I know the plug to the wall would be different for international customers. Look at the plug to the computer.

It's square, nonstandard, and you'd have to get a replacement from Apple.

And for the record I don't think this is a big deal at all. I mean how often do you lose power cords? And what ever could damage your power cord would completely hork your mac anyway.

Oh, the other end.

Being a stereotypical Mac user, I never look at the female end, but now that you bring it to my attention, I should probably check to see if it's any different from the one on the back of my G5.

Lemme just pull the cord out and have a look at it here and see if its any diffe...

I think this power cord is actually a standard, although it's a new standard, for high current applications.

Take note that the new PowerMacs also have twin Gigabit Ethernet ports (with Jumbo-frame support), now support workstation-level graphics cards, and ECC RAM. I suspect they looked over everything on the box to upgrade it to "workstation-class" toughness.

confession time:
A long time ago during my life as a miserable college student I zotted about 20 students. The setting; I was working into the early morning at the computer lab. I was fading in and out of consciousness. (no, not what you think, I was an engineer and this, unfortunately, was due to lack of sleep)

I shook my head a few times, leaned back in the chair, and stretched my arms back. I then straightened my legs out to give them a good stretch when, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

All the computers in the lab went down. I hit some power box on the floor with my toes and cut the power. I knew it was my fault but I just got up saying, "Hey! who did that!" and then stealthily made my escape. At least I think I was stealthy. I was pretty groggy back then.

In alot of cases that's not the case.

For example, there are some macs that will work with a standard ATX power supply. All you need is one or two barrel connectors to re-work the plug/wires.

Dell is also very proprietary. And in their case it's the same. Stability has very little to do with the equasion. It's more about trapping the customer.

Yes... well, I was.(someone corrected me on it)

I've had a problem with apple's non-standard designs for many moons. When I saw the picture it immediately struck that cord.

Though that cord is a standard, it's more of a server-centric cord type. So no astronomical pricing on this one.
