Police are trying to identify a man who robbed the Fairfield Meijer store last Tuesday. Investigators say the man a $14.95 price tag on a $750 computer and made it through checkout. Coincidentally, a sign at the end of the lane said "Best Deal of the Season." Police say the man drove away in a maroon Ford F-150 pickup and possibly has ties to the Dayton, Ohio area. If you can help police identify the man, call CrimeStoppers at 352-3040.

I realize this isnt breaking news but I just find this funny in way. How in the world did the cashier not notice that a computer was ringing up for 14.95! I first thought maybe the guy went through the USCAN where you scan the item yourself but he didnt as you can see from the security cam video. http://www.wkrc.com/mediacenter/?videoId=6659

If I pick up an item that is mismarked at the store and I go thru checkout. Is that robbing? no.

If I switch tags on an item and mismark the item with intent to go to checkout, am I robbing? yes.

If I see a 1995 BMW 325i selling for 1,500 dollars - am I going to be suspicous of the seller and ask "What's wrong with it?" or am I going to say to myself, "hell ya, I can replace the engine for that much and still come out ahead." and just buy the darn thing before somebody else does.

Heck, for all the guy knew - maybe it was returned merchandise and had a bad hard drive or something.

If I were the guy, I would return to the store and ask for a refund. The marked down computer was clearly defective. < /sarcasm >

More proof that no transaction can be made simple enough for someone not to screw up; and, more to the argument that no one ever notices the big mistakes. I would bet that that clerk followed every rule in the book; they were not hired to make judgment calls, they were not tasked with making judgment calls, so why should this surprise us?

because i work in retail Ive worked in retail for 7 years. Ive seen people try this. Im sorry but if a computer rings up that cheap Im going to be asking some questions. yet alone it comes up on the screen as a HAMMER. the guy took a sticker off a hammer and put it on the computer. The local news reported that. I sure would have noticed that on my screen in front of me. ha. Maybe Im just being harsh I dont know. If am Im sorry but people have there heads in the clouds way to much.

A few years ago, I was in a store and spotted a rechargeable battery for my cam corder. It was unmarked so I asked the clerk how much it was. He hit the scanner and it came up $1.95. Other comparable batteries on the wall were in the neighborhood of $30.

I asked the clerk if he knew that price was wrong. He said "probably, but what can I do about it?" I said "you could call the supervisor". "He would just say sell it for $1.95".

I went to the wall and got 4 more to ring out. BTW, I asked him if he had anymore in stock in the back room.

Do I feel guilty, hell no!!! I did everything I could to get the right price.

Exactly. They dumbed down cash registers so they could hire cashiers at a lower wage. Letting a high-priced item through every now and then is probably worth it compared to hiring (and paying) competent employees.

I bought several sanding discs for 0.01 cents each at Home Depo in the (rental dept), the girl scanned them and said wow only a penny, she kept scanning them. Regual price was like 4.00 each. About 7 months later I went back, and instead of the tool dept went back to the rental dept and grabbed a handful of discs and to my amazment the scanned for 0.01 cents again.. 7 months later... so I paid and left.

Another time in STAPLES I was waiting in line in a very busy store ready to purchase some software 29.95 when lo and behold it scanned for a penny. THe girl called the manager and he said he doesn't have time, tell the guy this is his lucky day. Cost me a penny.

It happens...

I bought pint cartons of buttermilk for months for 45c each (regular price $1.25)at Food 4 Less (subsidiary of Kroger). I told the clerk on more than one occasion that it was the wrong price.

Jeez, all these post of people that have made out one way or another! Am I the only one that has to watch everything like a HAWK?? Seems like ever other time I buy something, it rings up wrong, IN THE STORE'S FAVOR. Infuriates me! I'm at the point where I won't let the supermarket scan items unless I'm watching the screen.
