A friend of mine is going to Atlanta to work and is unfamiliar with the area.

She is in her thirties and would probably rent or buy a condo. Her prime concern is safety and commuting distance to her job in downtown Atlanta.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Folks around here love the exurban hellhole that is Gwinnett County and while it is OK for someone with kids, I would stay away. Marietta is a nice town and an easy commute.

Stay away from the City of Atlanta. Its essentially Detroit with better PR.

I heard that crime was bad in Atlanta,so safety is a big concern.

Lubbock Texas. It's a long commute but there is always Southwest Airlines.

Midtown is trendy and gay which means no one will pay her any attention.

Restaurants are good though and she will have no problem getting a decorator.

If she wants to live in the city itself, new condos are easily available in the Midtown area. Downtown Decatur also has many new condos and great shops. If she wants to go to the suburbs, almost anything to the north is a hellacious commute. I recommend Peachtree City on the southside, where I live, for a very easy drive to Atlanta.

I've always been under the impression that the more affluent an area is,the safer it is.

But then,a young kid like her may or may not be able and/or willing to live in a fancy area.

Alpharetta should be a safe place for her. It's a newly developed high end area north of Atlanta.

She's hardly a young girl and has always lived in affluent areas in Massachusetts, where I live.

Much more bang for her buck in Georgia, though. The problem is that even though she has done much traveling ,she has never been to Atlanta so she is busy getting recommendations.

Thanks for your help.

I would recommend that she get on a police website and check crime rates for the zip code she is considering. No place is crime free, but police blotters are very helpful. My personal advice is to go where the best school district is and find the best place she can afford.

Vinings is a great place. The condo's are kinda pricey but it's a nice convenient place. I lived there in an apartment before I bought my condo a few years ago. Actually the local newspaper did a story a few years ago talking about how Vinings was a great place for single women to live (I think I posted that article of FR). All the streets had sidewalks with lots of hills if you were a runner and I knew all the backroads so if the highway was jammed up I could drive the backroads into work.
