SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Charlie Weis, welcome to your kingmaking moment.
You know all about what makes Notre Dame the stuff of myth and lore -- hell, you lived a glory-days chunk of it as a student here. You've embraced the tradition of the place so often since becoming head coach, some people swear you're half leprechaun.
And Saturday -- outlined against a blue-gray October sky, perhaps? -- you have a chance to own a shiny piece of Golden Dome glory for yourself.
That's how big this is for Coach Crew Cut.
The grand scope of Saturday's game against almighty USC is exactly the thing that brings out the Notre Dame (cue the angels singing on high) in Notre Dame. And this is exactly the kind of game that can transform a Notre Dame coach into a hero.
A seemingly unbeatable opponent riding a mile-long winning streak. A rising Fighting Irish team. An unmistakable feel of fall in the northern Indiana air. Notre Dame Stadium. Touchdown Jesus. The whole Domer shebang.
Cue the marching band. Feel your skin prickle. Set the echoes' alarm clock for 3:30 p.m. ET.
"It's about winning games, period, here," receiver Jeff Samardzija said. "There's a lot of people who love Notre Dame, but there's a whole lot more people who love Notre Dame when you win."
And love the coach when he wins games like this.
The kingmaking moment happened in this stadium for Lou Holtz, twice. Seventeen years ago this Saturday, Holtz accelerated the resurgence of the Irish program by upsetting No. 1 Miami 31-30 -- the catalyst for Notre Dame's last national championship. In 1993, Holtz did it again, beating No. 1 Florida State in South Bend 31-24. This is the biggest Notre Dame game since that day.

I just checked USC schedule, last game against UCLA !
That could be awesome, lets hope it is.
I don't think Reggie Bush nor Matt Lienert were at full speed today. The USC defense is not nearly as good as last year, especially the backfield.
okay
If that is true, then the clock should have continues to run.
Hey Nick,
You guys lost. Just like the other 28 teams that have played these guys over the past 2+ years. Notre Dame converted almost every third down play, got a punt return for a touchdown, had 5 different SC receivers drop wide open passes, had a lead with less than two minutes left, had USC 4th and 9 on their own 20 with a minute left, and still they lost. 28 in a row. At Notre Dame, with all the hype and with all the support. And if they had spotted the ball at the 3 (which would not have been correct), then Bush would have just taken it in from there. USC is good and they stepped up against huge obstacles. Be happy you stayed that close.
The other thing is, I hope Notre Dame is happy with the knee injuries (two of their guys, one of SC's guys, Desmond Reed) after they let the grass grow so long in the hopes it would reduce SC's speed advantage over Notre Dame. Great "gamesmanship" Coach Weis, go see those players in the hospital next week when they have their surgeries. And by the way, your 0-1 becomes 0-2 when you come out here next year to get waxed in the Coliseum.
Lamers wore the green jerseys. They knew better but the coach had hubris and thought he could break the jinx.
Otherwise, they would have won.
Are there replays at Notre Dame home games the way there are at Big 10 and Big 12 games? If so, what rules apply to their use?
In nonconference games (Notre Dame is independent), the visiting team gets to decide if their will be a replay crew. Pete Carroll does not like replays, so he opted to decline.
Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure if the decision to put the time back up the scoreboard was made by the officials on the field or by replay officials. I didn't tune in till the end of the first half of the Colorado v Texas game which was about 2:30 before the end of the first half of the USC v Notre Dame game. When I saw USC coaches signaling timeout, I thought it was really strange, because they were out of timeouts.
It's my understanding that they should have been penalized for that time-out call.
I thought letting the grass grow so long was kind of a chicken shit tactic by ND. It was about as bad as the rough for the us Open Golf Championship.
The USC coaches were trying to get the point across that the clock should not still be running, and the guy used a time-out type signal to make the point. If you watch the tape, you can see by the coach's actions that he is not making a definitive time-out request, but making the point about the clock.
Nope, NCAA rules call for the ref's to just ignore a request for a time out when a team has none. No penalty is warranted.
I'm glad that Notre Dame lost as well. Notre Dame represents the epitome of all that is EVIL in the world (pretenious liberal snobs/ pretend Catholics), and I'm always happy when they lose. Perhaps, Weiss yelled at his players after the game like he did when they lost to MSU.
Yesterday's win was arguably USC's most dramatic victory at Notre Dame Stadium since November 21, 1931, when with about a minute to go in the game, Johnny Baker kicked a field goal to power the Trojans over the Domers, 16-14.
