The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Enough to grease a pan.

When I unwrap a stick, I save the papers and use them for greasing purposes.

My mom used to do that :~D

I also have a nice jar of bacon grease. :)

With all the biscuits I've been making lately, I'm all out of butter wrappers! (Made a couple dozen biscuits to bring to work recently)

You'd have to see if the local community college even offers courses that Steve would be equipped to teach, but the one I went to always hired people in the field to teach the evening or Saturday classes.

This stoopid basketball hoop has been in the way every time we've turned a truck around in the driveway for 4 years.

Well, we're gonna pull the horse trailer into the compound today so it had to go...

Did I tell you I run my bacon grease through a coffee filter? Makes it almost like Crisco in consistency.

Hey, give me your biscuit recipe, if you don't mind...I'd like to try 'em.

Yeah - it's too open to mischief. It's OK to keep it out front in summer when we're using it all the time, but for winter I think we'll go to the trouble of backing it into the driveway, so it's secure...

Getting it in and turned around in the compound is going to be something of a challenge though ;~D

You strip your horses? Why, are they wearing clothes most of the time?

My fancy take-to-werk biscuits?

Ingredients: 1 cup buttermilk (I just add a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice to milk)
4 cups sifted all-purpose flour (sift before measuring)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 pkg active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup shortening
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

In a small pan, slowly heat buttermilk until bubbles form around the edge. Cool to lukewarm. Grease two large cookie sheets. Sift the flour with baking powder and salt into a large bowl.

Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a small bowl, add sugar and stir to dissolve completely. Stir in the lukewarm buttermilk.

Cut shortening into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or two knives used scissor fashion. the mixture will resemble coarse cornmeal.

Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk mixture all at once. Stir around bowl with fork to mix well. Dough will be stiff. Knead on a floured surface until smooth - about 5 minutes. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness.

With floured biscuit cutter, cut straight into the dough. Do not twist. Reroll trimmings and cut more biscuits. Place on prepared cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Prick tops with fork. Cover loosely with towel and let rise in a warm place for half an hour until double in bulk.

Before baking, brush tops with melted butter. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 400F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden-brown.

When I make these for werk, I make them the night before and let them proof in the fridge. Then I take them out and let them warm up for about a half hour before putting them in the oven.
