The only way to rise above it would be to send them a check for the whole amount today. If you can't do that, then the credit, today.
Waiting until tax return time, months from now, is the most slacker-like option. And you don't want to have to promise away all that cash. Who knows what other need you'll have for it. You didn't ask for them to do this.
I still cringe when you speak ill of them, because I don't think it's healthy for you to do that. But I think the best thing you can offer them is that credit.

I've failed to repay much more through the years....
You know, I suggested recently that a cheap way to do a wedding would be to steal the flowers from a nearby funeral. But if it got as much grief as the free weddin' pics, then maybe not worth it...

That's true...but I can't do that. (Send them a check...they know we can't do that and I'm sure they're not even considering it.)
And I'm more than happy to do the "credit" thing. But if I do it and it's not what they want...it could just cause worse problems.
Seems to me both of your problems would be a lot less if one of you would make a phone call :~D

My dad just now called. He said he hoped that I could transfer the money into their account and they could get the money back but to wait until he found out for sure. So I'm on hold.
I told him that I would do that and that I had made sure that all my other bills were going to be sent to his house and he could go ahead and mistakenly pay those too.
Dead silence for about 3 seconds.
Then my dad JUST ROARED with laughter.
