Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Fare you well! Fare you well!
New verse:
|
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Hey, Hair ... is the equine flu mostly a three-week annoyance, or can it get serious?
To: Rose in RoseBear
Good heavens... horse flu? Yeesh... bird flu... dog flu...
We don't have to worry about a fish flu do we? :-)

I need a way to prevent shipment of a group of horses from the same barn. Don't want to hurt the horses in any way, just want them kept in place. Like a human with a bad cold; you eventually recover, but for a few days you don't want to do much more than stay in bed.
To: Rose in RoseBear
Equine Leprosy. Makes their tails fall off, maybe drop a leg here and there. Wouldn't want that to spread.

You're feisty tonight!
How are you? Are you settled for a while, or do you have to get on another plane?

The new "horse flu" they are talking about I don't know a lot about. There are several strains of influenza in horses and most horses are vaccinated for the common ones, outbreaks are rare in well cared for stock.
But a common outbreak that can affect a whole barn is Strangles. The vaccine is short lived and not 100% and they routinely quarantine barns that have a case show up.
West Nile Virus Is also going around, but it's a mosquito born illness... not a horse-to horse illness... so a quarantine doesn't make a lot of sense.
I'd go with Strangles.

...dont' mean to be feisty.... :-)
Sometimes it just happens. Not proud of it. :-)
I'm still unsettled. In da 'hotel in SF tonight. Going to da office tomorrow for a couple of hours, but then to the airport for the afternoon to do the airplane thing.
Good news is that I get to stay home for a whole week after this. Yippee Ki-ay... or something. :-)

I'd go with Strangles. Suitably icky-sounding.

I considered strangles, but ... geez! It's soooo bad, and icky contagious!
However ...
This group of horses has been gathered from several different places. They're being assembled at one location, then each will be sent off to a different destination. If one horse has it, and that horse arrives with it, then they could all be kept under observation for 7-10 days. That's about the right length of time.
Thanks, Hair! I hope to be able to say "No animals were killed during the plotting of this novel!"

That's why you're so feisty! You're in the Evil Place!
You'll settle down when you get home.
You'll have to make room for me on the deck ... does it get foggy?

Miss Rose... there is always room for you on the deck... :-) Any time.
And oh, yes... it gets wonderfully foggy. Especially on fall and winter mornings. So thick you can't even see the end of the dock. Then it lifts about ten-ish. What's cool is that it lifts slowly so that the other side (the island across the way) appears under the cloud first... then the edges... and the sky not for quite some time after.
Darn groovy, that. :-)

It's getting there. NaNoWriMo starts Monday at midnight ... I'm debating whether or not I want to attend one of the midnight kickoff writing parties.
Maybe we should ... bet we'd meet some interesting folks!
