Maybe the early bird will get that elusive worm of news-cycle dominance today. As of this writing, President and Mrs. Bush have already done an NBC Today Show interview with Matt Lauer, and participated in an early morning Habitat for Humanity build in Covington, LA. They'll soon visit a re-opened elementary school in Pass Christian, MS. The intent: to change the subject from Miers/Rove/DeLay/Iraq to the Administrations effort to rebuild the Gulf Coast, around which Bush appears to be re-centering his domestic agenda. Democrats and like-minded interest groups are also adjusting to try to block this effort; see below for details. The Bushes are scheduled to arrive back at the White House at 3:25 pm.
Highlights from Bush's interview on Today: He responded to criticism of the federal governments initially slow response to Katrina, saying: I do my job as best I can If I didnt respond well enough, we are going to learn the lesson. He added that a lot of good is currently taking place in New Orleans and that the facts of this story will come out in time. Asked about Harriet Miers, he said that the criticism over her selection to the Supreme Court is due to the fact that shes outside the judicial monastery. Just because she hasnt served on the bench doesnt mean she cant be a great Supreme Court justice, he said. Harriet Miers is going to be confirmed, and people will see why I put her on the bench. He also said he expects violence leading up to the vote on Iraqs constitution.
As weve seen over the past two months, things havent always gone smoothly when the White House has had a chance to change the subject. In late August, as Iraq and record-high gas prices dominated the headlines, Hurricane Katrina presented Bush with the opportunity to look presidential while handling a natural disaster. But Katrinas aftermath turned out to be an additional problem for the Administration. Then early last week, as attention turned to Tom DeLays indictment and new revelations in the Plame leak investigation, Bushs Supreme Court pick offered another chance to change the subject. But conservatives complaints about Miers turned her selection into another headache for the White House. In the Plame leak investigation, Judith Miller of the New York Times meets today with investigator Patrick Fitzgerald to discuss newly discovered notes of her conservations with Lewis Libby, while Karl Rove is set to testify before a grand jury for the fourth time sometime this week. In his interview on TODAY, Bush refused to comment on Roves involvement in the Valerie Plame investigation because the case is under review. Rove, meanwhile, addresses the Hudson Institute's grand opening in DC tonight at 5:30 pm.
Hey, nice link....
*niff sniff*
Is this an article, and if so do you have a link for it?
On ice, please.
That's the Cool Mod. Since when do they retread?
Confusion. Beer me!
Of course Jimmy is praised for his work for Habitat for America, as was Clinton/Gore/s ten second photo op. President Bush is accused of doing this as a photo op never mind that he had worked hard doing this in the past. Clinton and Gore were NEVER accused of doing this for political reasons.
"Beer me"
Regular can, keg can, or real keg?
And will it fit on the checkerboard?
*chuckle*
Laugh!
;-)
I knew we should have rigged up a still in the Undead Thread.
