No Hangovers for Two Years! [Now 3 Years!]
self | October 8, 2005 | RobFromGa

Posted on 10/08/2005 7:33:57 AM PDT by RobFromGa

October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!

When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".

I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.

I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.

I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.

Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.

Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.

How do you know if you had a good time the night before if you no longer wake up with puke on your shoes? ;)

I always knew when everyone else told me all about what fun I had. (that was my college drinking days)

Good morning.

I like not waking up bruised and bloody and wondering how much damage I had done. For the life of me, I don't know why I drank, but I know I stopped because I like being married.

I now limit myself to one Jameson & water when we go out to dinner and the occasional pilsner on a hot day.

Congratulations on this important milestone. Sobriety is the best gift an alcoholic can give themselves.

My father died way too young of alcohol-related health problems after a lifetime of alcoholism. The single year he was sober was the best year of our lives (my mother, my brother and my sister). Unfortunately, he did not admit to himself or to me that he had a problem until about a year before he died but it was too late by then.

He actually died of cancer. He got cancer in the only small portion of his liver that was still functional.

Good on ya Rob ... and I'll keep you in my prayers.

"I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41. "

I know the feeling. Were all those evenings spent in a peasant buzz with late sleep-ins worth the missed opportunities and limited productivity?

Don’t sweat it, you and I both still have half a life left.

I haven’t had a hangover in well over 20 years. I haven’t quit drinking either

I'll echo that comment with the exception that, for me, it's been just over 10 years.

It parallels my adoption of conservative principles in other areas of my life as well.

Personal responsibility and self control beat sobriety any day.

Oh, you drank the cheap stuff, did you? I stuck with Jim Beam, more of an upper-crust libation.

My daddy was alcoholic who hadn't had a drink
in about 20 years when he died.
He always said "I just tip my hat to it,
if you don't bother it, IT won't bother you"

God Bless you with a hangover free lifetime.

Are you saying sobriety isn't self control or personal responsibility?

Personal responsibility and self control beat sobriety any day.

For some, "personal responsibility and self control" require sobriety.
