The DVD and CD of Cream's summer stand at the Royal Albert Hall has just been released I guess to coincide with their multiple night gig at Madison Square later this month.
Check out the multiple songs available for video streaming from AOL Music.
For those Freepers under 40, this is the best rock band for muscial virtuoso, writing talent, power, innovation, etc. to come out of the 60's.
Beatles for me were rock/pop; Stones were good, but their music was basic blues rips, the talent wasn't as high. The Who were in a different realm, more operatic.
Cream was just three guys with disparite styles who's fusion created a legacy that still influences year after year, decade after decade: Jimi Hendrix Experience, Robin Trower, James Gang, Grand Funk, Beck, Bogert Appice, Rush, ZZ Top, King's X, Nirvana, etc.
Moreover, if you consider the singer/guitarist/bassist/drummer model, then Cream's influence is even broader: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, etc.
What is really amazing is that Ginger Baker is still alive.
And the relevance of this is?
muscial = musical
They'll be playing at Madison Square Garden sometime soon for a few concerts. I'm glad to see Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker make some cold hard cash! They can use it now they're old.
Cream was one of the best back then. I saw them once and though they sounded thin. They needed the overdubbing of the records. Same for the Stones
Others,most likely,disagree.
Good Lord it is obvious:
Cream (rock giants) = Luttig, Brown, Clement (legal giants)
Miers (legal/political manager) = Brian Epstein (a good manager but he didn't make the music)
I went to 7 of their Farewell Tours back in the 60's. LOL!
They were always saying farwell.
For the rock and roll ping list....
Seriously, I'm looking forward to checking out the DVD: hopefully Clapton will prove that he can still jam, despite all his wimpy pop of the last 30-odd years.
Stones will perform here in Southern Calif. soon and the tickets are HIGH. I think $80 - $400.
It sounds pretty good, but doesn't approach his two best periods:
Derek & the Dominos (check out their In Concert album and the unreleased/released material on Clapton's Crossroad's Anthology)
Journeyman Tour
Who?
I first heard this group in the late 60s, and of course I knew of Clapton, but not Bruce nor Baker. I thought then as now that they were fantastic.
Would've thought they'd have curdled by now.
There's a huge difference. I love the Stones old stuff before MIck Taylor left, but would never waste my time seeing them live with a sixty year old Mick Jagger running around like a 25 year old studly fag aping Tina Turner.
But Cream always played it straight. No prancing or eroticism. The three old guys, Clapton-Bruce-Baker, can get up on stage and play their songs just as well and just as credibly as they did three and one half decades ago

Ebay has some Cream tix going for a thousand dollars. They play NYC in October
I saw Cream, on my first real date, somewhere around 1968 or 1969. They performed in PHX in a theater in the round, on a stage that was to rotate. Well, it broke down, and all I saw for the entire concert was Ginger Baker's back and the amps. Every once in a while when Clapton or Bruce went out to a mike, I could see them, but not when they were playing. Since I'm a drummer, I didn't mind watching Baker the whole time.
"Journeyman Tour"
That was a good show.
Other than that, Clapton was good with John Mayall back in the early 60's.
This will be a snoozefest.
