Word For The Day, Wednesday, October 5, 2005 - nemesis
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 10/05/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

nemesis \NEM-uh-siss\ noun

1a. one that inflicts retribution or vengeance
1b. a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent *
2a. an act or effect of retribution
2b. a source of harm or ruin; curse

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
The team will be facing their longtime nemesis in the very first round of the playoffs.

Did you know?
Nemesis was the Greek goddess of vengeance, a deity who doled out rewards for noble acts and punishment for evil ones. The Greeks believed that Nemesis didn't always punish an offender immediately but might wait generations to avenge a crime. In English, "nemesis" originally referred to someone who brought a just retribution, but nowadays people are more likely to see animosity than justice in the actions of a nemesis.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

George Will thinks he's becoming Miers nemesis.....However, as soon as someone astute, points out Clarence Thomas pre DCCCoA Legal credentials, Meirs is going to look like John Marshall...and that should make the disgruntled STFU!.

Thomas...
1.He served as Assistant Attorney General of Missouri from 1974-1977,
2. an attorney with Monsanto from 1977-1979
3. Legislative Assistant to Senator John Danforth from 1979-1981.
4. From 1981-1982, he served as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the US Department of Education,
5. Chairman of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1982-1990.

Yeah, America's Team, the New England Patriots!

OK, I always hated hearing the cowboys called that, so I figgered I'd try to raise some hackles with that one for fun.

I can see a bunch of big, burly guys sidling up to the bar asking for booties.

Probably not as dangerous as ordering a Bierbitzch.

i don't blame you, it has to be very hard. it will require a whole lot of effort on both of your parts to protect them and cushion them from this. My 11 yo has a friend at school who is the product of a divorced home. BOTH sets of parents come to everything, share custody back and forth and just generally provide an extremely loving and nurturing environment for he and his sister.

i heard this AM that the BUS was ready to go, but they aren't sure if they are taking him out of park yet or not.

You'd better hope Cowers is better at managing the bus than Nagin is.
