Here is where I am. Running XP Home.
Was surfing a sports board. Got a BSOD. And since then cannot boot at all.
lsass.exe system error invalid parameter
Did enough searching to convince me I got the Sasser worm or some variation thereof.
Booted from CD; tried repair console. No success. So I am ready to hopefully reinstall. I want to save my programs. Data I need is backed up on a second hard drive.
So when I get to the point of selecting which drive to install on. I get the message that I will lose data, apps, etc. My OC is on an unpartitioned 156 gig HD.
The message says hit C to partition. Nothing happens.
My second HD is a 76 gig:
Partition 1: FAT 39 MB
Partition 2: NFTS 76 MB
Unpartitioned: 8 MB
Questions:
1. Can I partition my primary drive without reformatting it?
2. If I do the install on the secondary, will my apps on the primary work, so maybe I can get rid of the worm I think I have?
Sucks, cause I have AVG running, set for auto updates. Cannot imagine how I caught it.
Spent too much time at work looking for solutions. I'm pretty sure a reinstall is my only one. But hoping for some direction to make it as painless as possible.
Thanks on advance.
Download and follow the instructions, then run Windows update and keep it updated.
Ah, from what I read, you appeared to be unsure where the OS would install. Yes, you'll lose applications, if you reload the system. If you've lost the CD's for your apps, this would be a problem.
1. Partitioned slave, which currently has no OC.
2. Inpartitioned primary, which has the OS that is corrupt.
Personally, I would avoid the reformat/reinstall at all costs.
I does pay handsomely to invest in a reliable backup device (complete re loadable system image) when all else goes to hell in a hand basket.
Then reinstall all your apps and copy their settings and files from the old MASTER drive.
Scan the old MASTER before moving any files, though.
As a computer novice only have two practical solutions here and you've been told both of them. Either scan the MASTER or swap and reinstall the OS.
I am back up and running almost 100%. Please accept my thanks for all the suggestion that helped me decide on the best solution. A few years ago, had that happened, I just lug the box to a shop.
The repair option did not work, so I did reinstall. Had to reload some (not all) drivers. Only dealing with a screen resolution issue now, which I expect to solve on my own.
Again, thank you all very much. Freepers are the BEST!!
Thanks for the follow-up. I've never taken a computer in for service, but I've sweated through a lot and taught myself volumes. Your soul has been purified by this experience. ;0)
Go to google, punch in your worm and you will find removal instuctions and maybe even a small program that will do it for you. :-)
I'm learning as I go. Gonna get me some serious backup and a dual boot on me HD as well.
That's a little hard to do, when you can't even boot up. But, thanks for the advice.
Go to a friend and go to google while working on yours if you have to. It is much easier to fix this stuff with the assistance of the internet.
