SARPY COUNTY, Neb. -- Last week, two goats were found strangled, drained of blood, then positioned inside their pen. The Nebraska Humane Society's initial analysis was that the killings may have been performed by a cult, Omaha television station KETV reported.
Investigators said this week that they need new leads in the killings.
The goats' owners were devastated by the deaths. They said the goats were family pets.
Beth Roth said her four daughters played with the goats nearly every day for the year that they'd been caring for them. Last year, they even posed the goats for the family's Christmas card.
"They named these pets after my grandma and grandpa -- their great-grandma and grandpa -- Phyllis and Charlie," Roth said.
Roth said her daughters won Charlie at the county fair. Phyllis appeared a few weeks later.
"Goats are very sweet, fun pets. They're very mischievous. They like to play and escape out of the pen and get into things they're not supposed to," Roth said.
Roth talked about discovering the animals after they were attacked.
"We noticed when we pulled up, they weren't moving. Their bodies were posed in the same position next to each other," Roth said. "My kids were traumatized by this, and so am I. It's hard to sleep at night because I can't get the picture out of my mind of the goat's face when it died. You could tell they suffered."
Roth said the family drives by the farm every day, which upsets her children. She said they'd like to get more pets, but not until they know what happened to their goats.
"I can't have anything there until the person is caught. I can't put anything there because they might do it again, and I can't put an animal in harm's way," she said.
The Humane Society and the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department are investigating the case. They said they have few leads because the pen where the goats were killed was left very clean.
Someone seems to be playing with the legend of the chupacabra (goat sucker).
Let's kill the perpetrators the same way. I would be more concerned this is a serial killer, not some cult.
Sounds like the aftermath of Ronnie Earle's last date.
Chubacabra?
And just where was Bush when this happened?
