>The first spot, titled "It's Time," shows a player (an actor, not an NHL player) in a locker room, surrounded by candles and accompanied by a woman who ceremoniously helps him don his hockey garb. The ads feature quotes from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" along with dramatic camera work and music reminiscent of the film "Braveheart."

I actually quit bothering with the NHL in about 1977, although I still used to watch it now and then when I had a bet down on the game. Nearly won $48,000 on the Florida Panthers winning the Cup ... even their own coach wouldn't have bet on them and I have no idea why I did.

I'm ignoring all hockey now and will be until they bring back the 1970s Canadiens.

You should be able to find the offensive material on NHL.com

"I'm ignoring all hockey now and will be until they bring back the 1970s Canadiens."

The current rendition of the Tampa Bay Lightning might change your mind. Habs fans on hockey boards constantly post rumors about our players coming "home."

Whatever credibility Burke had left is now in the toilet, even with the NYT. Sheehan should be looking at Burke. This is what she'll become.

They're all pretty old at this point, wouldn't expect them to have much success ;)

Burk told The Canadian Press that the ad is "offensive on many levels."

Yet, somehow...life goes on.

I, too, am looking forward to the return of hockey. My point was that Martha Burk is in a huff over such a minor issue when you and your neighbors are faced with such threatening conditions. I hope you all get through it without too much damage. My faith community is continually praying for you.

No ESPN oferred the NHL about half the money they were paying the NHL before the strike. The NHL rejected the offer and went with the Outdoor Life Network.

Au contraire -- did you see them playing in Edmonton two years ago -- outdoors in -35 degree temperatures? Compared to that bunch of Russian shinny players and third tier goons most of the clubs field these days, they looked just as good as they did 35 years ago to me! :)

Besides, I think the average age of the Leafs is now about 45!

ok -- I recall ESPN not exercising the option on the old contract -- I must have missed the latter story.
