"10th anniversary today.."

Why don't you simply invite wifey to sit down and watch them with you?

Uhh.., never mind. But seriesly, congratulations, and many more.

No I don't feel threatend by them at all, and I don't believe I listed a strong female character as one of the reasons I think its a bad show.

But I do find it interesting that just about every strong male character from TOS has been castrated. They couldn't have elevated any of the pre-existing female characters (from TOS) to a stronger role? And the subtlties of "Man" now being the creators of the cylons; and we have all these strong females now to come in and save the day sounds more like a product of hollywierd PC run amok.

I would have had no problem with ronnie moore creating his very own *original* vision of feminism in any kind of show he wanted. But I do take exception with this so called "re-imagining".

I enjoyed the original 2-part movie and the first season was very good (except for that one episode that experimented with farce and was one of the most painful hours of tv in the last 10 years).

I wouldn't say it has been getting better, though. This season started very slow and was pretty bad for long spells, but episodes 6-9 have been very good and the show is back to top form. I expect episode 10 tonight will be very good.

I still prefer B5 as the best tv SF show ever, but the new BG definitely makes the top 10 list.

I don't know about that. Starbuck is a good character but a lot of her act is putting on a cynical grin and wisecracking. Not necessarily a sign of strength, she is a couragous pilot to the point where she might be reckless, and that could be interpreted as overcompensating for some deep insecurity.

The President is a good character and a good leader, but she reminds me a lot of Gov Blanco.

Dee on the bridge isn't notably strong or tough, and her little powwow with Adama was offbase and manipulative. She rubs me the wrong way.

Tigh's wife appears to be a dreaful person.

They have started teasing sexual musical chairs a bit, which isn't a welcomed thing and shows they might be already running out of ideas.

B5 had better female characters I think, though in many ways it was a very manly show.

So you would return to the old BSG where women were only good for breeding stock and communications officers? They even had an episode in the old one about how revolutionary, and unadvisable, it was for women to take on the role of fighter pilot when the male pilots were sickened/poisoned. This was better scripting? How 1930's of you.

The sublties of opposing mythos, human politiciing, even some interior mechinations with the Cylon ranks are a lot more interesting than anything the old series could have come up with. Even the character of Baltar is far more interesting than the original human traitor.

Women have more than one purpose. I don't mind the new BSG acknowleding that.

I've met military pilots that had Starbuck's attitude. Seeing how much some of them were lifting in the gym, yeah.... it was probably insecurity. ;-)

B5 had Delenn and Susan. Notably strong characters...

"Who am I, I am Susan Ivanova, commander, daughter of Andrei and Sophi Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is going to kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth, sweetheart, I am death incarnate, and the last living thing that you will ever see. God sent me!"

Probably shouldn't have posted that as some posters seem to have a problem with overly agressive female characters...

You feel threatened by agressive women, so the whole series is trash.

I suspect AFreeBird just misses Dirk Benedict, Lorne Greene and Muffey.

And the little bit of Stargate I've seen I think is really week, cliched sci-fi that I've seen before, but I admit that's more an issue with my tastes and don't think it's "sad" that people watch it and think it's good.

SG-1 isn't bad. SG-Atlantis is just plain... weak.

They can't all be written by Joss Whedon and Tim Minear. Although, that'd be interesting for a couple seasons... ;-)

I'm not sure that I'd call Starbuck feminized either.

You are right. I must be thinking of Atlantis and have not ever watched SG-1 (though I thought the Stargate movie was weak overall with an interesting premise). Atlantis had some weird magical Xena looking chick on one episode and other was the seen-it-before-affliction that changes a crew member into a monster.

Heck, I enjoyed Enterprise, even though it was same-old-same-old and really didn't seem to have a clue about character until season 4 (too little, too late), but compared to the quality of Galactica and Firefly, Enterprise was crap. So was Voyager.

For those recording tonight's BSG, the ScFi.com website warns that the episode will run 2 minutes long. I didn't check the SGA page. If they go long too, things will really get screwy.

Agreed.

I started out hating what they did with the new BSG before even seeing an episode. Then I rented a DVD of the original BSG. It was unwatchable. Bad acting. Bad development. Bad story arcs. Bad, bad, bad... So when I got around to watching the new BSG, I was actually rather impressed. Compared to Atlantis, Voyager, and Enterprise, it's almost Shakespearian. I'd even say it's a notch above SG-1, but only because there is more eye candy in it.

Firefly... why do the truly great ones get cut first? Still, the Big, Damn Movie hits the screens next week. How that one does will be the telling point for whether or not we see more of the Big, Damn Heroes or not.

I just wish this trash would end.

Only YOU can end the bs. There's this cool little button on the TV - it says "power". YOU HAVE THE POWER! Go ahead, hit the button!

I like Battlestar, never saw the orig series (the commercials made it look like "Lost In Space" production values). I like the strong female characters, I really like the religious undertones. And I like how Starbuck takes no crap and kicks ass! I like that none of the female crew members act like sissies. But why does the technology look like it's from the 70's? I mean, mein Gott, the phones have cords!!!

The sublties of opposing mythos, human politiciing, even some interior mechinations with the Cylon ranks are a lot more interesting than anything the old series could have come up with.

I think Ron Moore (or was it the director Rymer) summed up the problem with the first series. Their entire civilization is wiped out in the greatest holocaust mankind has ever known, within two hours they are partying it up on a casino planet.

Moore just took the premise more seriously than the original show did. He made the whole thing look like a continuation of the first hour of the original Pilot, forgetting all of the rest.

Not to say there weren't good moments in the old series. There was one episode (Experiment in Terra - see, I've got geek-cred) in which Apollo was addressing the leaders of some planet and warned them, "We found the hard way that the opposite of war is not peace, but very often, slavery." One of the most conservative things I ever saw on TV during the cold war and agitation for a nuclear freeze. And remember, that was written only 3 years after the fall of Saigon - where the South Vietnamese learned the same lesson (but American liberals still haven't). And I'm beginning to think that Ron Moore is carrying on that tradition, with his mocking treatment of the press, showing that democratic institutions aren't the infallible things we hope and that the military is a damn organized operation and honorable profession.

Adama is an old-fashioned commander. Doesn't believe in wireless tech and networking computers because the Cylons could hack in. He's portrayed as a dinosaur who's butt was saved because of these eccentricities.

And I love having bullets instead of energy weapons!

NO idea who Ron Moore is, nor what his philosophy might be. I like the mythos they are creating. Not because I agree with it, but because it's interesting in a way that so little on TV is these days.

Same went for Firefly. It was different. Frontier economics. Frontier justice. Heroes on HORSES fer' Pete's sake! It made you re-think what freedom should be. I liked that. Still do.

Don't just feed me the same re-hashed pablum over and over again. There is no faster way for me to reach for the remote.

Ron Moore is executive producer of Galactica. He did Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well. I agree with your take on how TV needs to be interesting, not just the same old rehash of the same old plots. I don't need 4 Law & Orders.

Or 17 CSI's.

I liked DS-9. Every bit as much as I liked B5. With the constant improvements in CGI technology... these shows are becoming really kinda neat.

I'm still hoping someone decides to tackle Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books as a series. More Fantasy than Sci-Fi, but I think some of the themes and plots would go over big with the Friday Night Sci-Fi crowd.
