Ok...

Let us do some 2 dimensional math.... The cloud is 10 million miles wide and headed to Earth.... hmmm... The Earth is 93 million miles from the sun... So, that gives us 186 million miles orbital diameter... Right there alone that is roughly a 1/20 chance to be hit since it is travelling very fast relative to our orbit... Now, if you want to scare me, change that 10 million to 10 billion and then we will talk... Don't even get me started on the 3rd dimension and orbital mechanics.

I should have started with 'Don't Panic!' and another quote from the same book: "Space is big, really big, you don't know how mind boggingly big it is... etc. etc."
