I got into it for world records. 3DMarks is a graphics benchmark that turned into a competiton. I got heavy into it and at one point attained 5th in the world. After a time, it got too expensive to keep up. Now hardware manufacturers sponsor people to break records. But I learned to keep ahead of the processor market that way. I do whatever anyone else does with their computer, but the thing that still pushes me to do it is gaming, and because I can. I buy what the man lets me, then I make it better. Some people use extreme overclocking for economic reasons. You can buy a less expensive processor, and clock it up to run like a more expensive processor, and you don't even have to super cool it do do this. Hope that explains it.

I save those for the submarine races.

I run an AMD FX-55 under freon at -61 c.(that's what my evaporator says right now) with the memory highly overclocked.

Gamer, huh?

I use my G5 to modify graphics, and video, using Apple's Final Cut Pro. It works, and it works much in the same way that a lot of the programs on my first, FatMac (c.1984) worked. They furnished Macpaint, and MacDraw (along with MacWrite, etc) with the 'puter.

Using a mouse, and a GUI, in 1984, was a new thing, and made access so much easier than trying to remember c> stuff. I never learned it. I didn't need to. I did learn the keyboard shortcuts, and use most of them to this day.

I was taught about computers in the Navy. I first used them in the late 60's. I'll keep my Macs. I am contented to sit down, use it for it's intended purpose (an appliance), and go watch my tv, for entertainment...

Scaring the crap out of billy and taking Apple's #2 OS spot.

So you're an overclocker. I can see the "speed is everything" mindset.

Vista will take better advantage of my 6800 Ultra on the desktop.

Vista still won't quite take advantage of it as does OS X.

Admit it - you were nervous the first time you dragged a floppy to the trash, weren't you?

That one has an interesting history similar to Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows. It was there for the programmers, not for the general public to use. But yes, on the first Macs it was scary at first.

However, OS X changed that. The trash can changes to an eject icon when you drag removable media to it, so you know what's going to happen.

Which Apple itself doesn't necessarily feel compelled to follow

Quicktime was one of the biggest gripes the Tog has had for a while. He even has a few complaints against OS X.

I remember AMD had actually too-high yields on the early Athlon core chips. So due to the market segmentation of their low-end and high-end chips, they had to mark chips that tested at (IIRC) 800MHz as 650MHz parts. Thus, overclocking a slow Athlon core chip was nothing, since it was likely that it was built to handle the speed anyway.

Contrast that with Intel's PIII 1.13GHz, which was overclocked by the OEM in the first place.

Better development tools on the Mac?????

XCode is pretty damn good, and I say that as someone who uses Vistual Studio most of the time.

Good yielding chips are a pleasure to get. I doubled the speed of a 1.4 Athlon XP...it was a sweety. It's nice to see someone else around that understands speed binning chips. And I do enjoy talking hardware with you, to me it's more enjoyable than picking a fight over an OS. Thanx.

Yes I am a Gamer, does that make me like a heroin addict or something? I can also do anything that you can do on a computer, albeit using different software.
My mentor during my sound engineering days also learned electronics in the Navy (repairing radar I think). He taught me alot, started me in my understanding of electronic circuits. Pushed me along until I took up the study myself. I went from transistors to op amps, then to digital circuits. I could take an amplifier to him that wasn't working, and just by having it on his workbench he could scare it back into working. He also taught me my first carpentry skills by teaching me to build my own PA cabinets. A skill I use today to build and repair houses. So I thank you for your service and your knowledge.
In the near future we will all be using the nearly the same hardware. I submit that arguing over an OS is silly, and a much better way to come together around here is to talk about what we will have in common, which will be hardware. I'm really not such a bad guy.

But the rating showed the tools CLEARLY better not marginally better, not a little better. Pure bull. Not even an attempt for a fair evaluation. Lies like the media. Makes me puke.

Sorry my mistake. Assuming you would never add anything to your computer, I guess you're right. Why not change the evaluation to comparison between two systems when you only have Mac cables.

If you bothered to read the site, the author makes it clear he is evaluating only those items that are shipped with the OS... not 3rd party add-ons or extra-cost software. I merely cited his reasoning for his opinion.

In case you don't know... hell, you demonstrate you don't know... there have been no such things as proprietary "Mac cables" since 1997, when Apple adopted industry standard cabling, printers, and other peripherals. Apple was first to adopt both USB and IEEE-1394 (Firewire) as a platform standard.

Pure (Expletive deleted). Take me off your dumb (Expeltive deleted) ping list.

Thanks for participating... even if everything you have had to say has been negative... and often, as this last request, rude.

Bye.

As the author said, he is only comparing features shipped WITH the OSes. Are you seriously claiming that Visual Studio is included in the Windows XP releases???

Visual Studio Standard Edition
Estimated Retail Price: $299 US*
Upgrade Price: $199 US*

Go away. I have no time to worry about some silly ass word game. This article is as meaningless as the last few hundred you posted. Don't you have a life? (Please don't answer. Enjoy your posting and give generously to FreeRepublic.)
