The WORST Films of All Time (According To You!)
me | 9-13-05 | Houmatt

Posted on 09/13/2005 11:31:27 AM PDT by Houmatt

Just for fun, what is the WORST film you have EVER seen? And why?

I know a lot of you will be inclined to insert a Michael Moore film, but I am talking about films that are supposed to be fiction.

To begin, here is my personal pick: Ron Howard's The Grinch.

Surely we all remember the classic story from Dr. Seuss. Very simple, all about the spirit of Christmas.

Now, we get to the film. To begin with, the Whos are portrayed as the exact dead opposite of what they are in the story: They are quite materialistic.

Then, there seems to be something happening concurrent to the X-mas celebration. Just what the hell is the "Whobilation?" The audience is never told.

And there's the Grinch. The story says nobody knows why he hates Christmas. So, naturally, he is given a back story that rather implies he should be hating the Whos, or at least certain Whos, but certainly not Christmas. AND he is given a love interest (played by Christine Baranski).

Considering the target audience of the book (and therefore the film), there is some humor and a particular dress worn by the aforementioned Baranski early on (accented by a camera angle) that is just not suitable for that audience. So why have it? Heaven only knows.

Finally, when we get to the stealing part of the story, we see the Grinch predicting some very upset Whos. Now we all know what happens in the original story. But guess what? In this version of the story, the Grinch is proven right. In fact, it takes one of the Whos to talk the others into believing Christmas is more than just toys and trees.

I was shocked when I saw this film upon its release in theaters. Was it true Theodor Geisel's widow actually approved of this? How could she, when it absolutely violated everything her late husband was trying to impart with his beloved masterpiece in children's storytelling?

Whatever the truth was, one thing was certain: This film was an abomination. It was not merely bad; it was offensive. And I have never been so angered by a film like that to this day.

It is worth mentioning, as an aside, the film went on to make $250 million dollars domestic box office, making it perhaps the most profitable Ron Howard directed film to date. However, about three years later, when they decided to repeat or at least further the insult with another Seuss classic, Cat in the Hat, people saw right through it and gave it the b*tch slap it deserved.

G.I. Blues (best Elvis movie!)
Blue Hawaii (2nd best Elvis movie)
Pride & Prejudice (with Colin Firth only)

The Big Chill (its outdated now)
Scrooged!(Bill Murray is great, watch it every Christmas)

Ace Venture (second one)
Tango & Cash (purely horrible)
all Rocky movies after the original one
all Jaws movies after the original one.
Remake of The Importance of Being Ernest (it was boring!!)
Spider (it was horrible)
Bridget Jones' Diary sequel (stupid and boring)
Wedding Crashers (total waste of money)

Never saw Lost in TRanslation or Sideways.

THese days I have a sixth sense for lousy movies. Besides, I know that if certain lefties like Madonna's ex-husband are in it, that I simply cannot sit through it.

Still can't beleive I got suckered in and watched "A Beautiful Mind."

And one more thing, fyi, there is nothing wrong with baling out on a movie, at home or the theater, when you realize it's just a ruse to get your money or waste your time.

Worst film ever?

Darkness.

Released last December as the scariest movie in decades. It was even more disappointing than Blair Witch.

Titanic.

Broke up my first marriage.

She wanted to go see, it. I told her, "the damned ship sinks, there I just saved you ten dollars." She never forgave me for that.

Reality Bites. Nothing else comes close. It makes Robot Monster look like Citizen Kane. Anyone even remotely connected with that waste of celluloid needs to be banned from the industry.

Close second: High Hopes, a piece of Brit socialist agit-prop I was dragged to. Dire, dire, dire. The only sympathetic character to me was meant to be the villain of the film, the rest were commie weenies. An absolute mess.

"A Beautiful Mind"

Couldn't agree more, rented the headphones on a Train trip to watch it and fell asleep. Then, since I'm a mathematician, people kept telling me how great it was and so I rented it and .... fell asleep, made another attempt with the rental and guess what?? IMO Russell Crowe is a pretty bad actor who's been luck enough to get some good roles. How does that happpen so often (are you listening Keanu and Cruise)

I saw A Beautiful Mind and although I didn't think it was that bad of a film, I resent it for beating Fellowship of the Ring for the Best Picture Oscar. ABM is clearly a forgettable film, and FoTR will be a classic years from now. Of course, they awarded the ~last~ Lord of the Rings film, which I think was a nod to all three. That lessened the blow a little.
