Thats the place, about 50 miles northeast of me.
Main reason it died was it was cheaper to fuel the train engines with oil, recently discovered and developed, than continue to mine coal.

The coal is STILL HERE and is becoming more economical with each increase in the price of oil.

More, the Thurber thingy just scratched the surface.
Billions of tons of coal in Texas, just hasnt been economical until now.

Here's another bumper sticker in the same vein.

"If you enjoy high fuel prices thank an environmentalist"

Problem with Coal - the enviro-nazi crowd won't stand for a renewed interest in Coal, even with the improved technology for clean burning the coal.

Thing is - if we could use more of our coal, that would lower the demand for fuel oil. Thus it makes too much sense.

If we become "energy independent", then we drain our oil and the middle east keeps theirs, guaranteeing that sometime in the future we'll really be at their mercy. We need to pump their oil now, and ours later.

An interesting position but it assumes that the world's supply of oil is finite.

Suppose we could pump our now and keep on pumping?

There are theories that oil may be generated all the time, and a wee bit of evidence that it is occuring (old wells that have more oil than decades before). But if so, then it's apparently at rates that are non-sustainable.

Bottom line, I'd still like to drain the Saudis oil first till their production costs equal ours. With the caviat that we must have stragegic reserves capable of negating the effects of any boycott.
