Crowd turns ugly in close call for Hub cop
Boston Herald ^ | September 5, 2005 | By Brian Ballou

A lone cop trying to cuff a man firing bullets into the night sky in Roxbury early yesterday was confronted by nearly 200 frenzied, bottle-throwing, cursing youths.

By the end of the tense incident, eight people, including six teens, were arrested.

According to police, the officer walked into the crowd standing near Lawrence Avenue and Mascoma Street at 1:22 a.m. He watched Luis Rivera, 23, of Roxbury stand in the middle of the intersection, point a gun toward the sky, and squeeze off one round. The cop began to approach Rivera, who apparently did not realize that a uniformed officer was in the crowd. As the officer closed in, several people in the crowd yelled to Rivera that the officer was approaching. Rivera fled, dropping the weapon as he ran, police said. The officer caught up to him and ordered him to the ground.

The crowd, seeing Rivera on the pavement, began to get unruly, cursing the cop, throwing bottles, and trying to help Rivera get away.

At one point, a woman approached Rivera and tried to assist him in getting away by pulling on his shirt and yelling, ``Get up and run!''

Soon after, the policeman received backup from several other officers. Rivera was arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing for fleeing into a nearby middle school.

In addition to Rivera, police arrested Ruben Deleon, 23, and Jonathan Rodriguez, 18, both of Roxbury; Manuel Pereyra, 17, and Jose Bones, 19, both of Boston; Enrique Cardona, 17, of Dorchester; Henry Monroig, 17, of Roxbury; and Leandro Pena, 17, of South Boston.

They will be arraigned tomorrow in Dorchester District Court on charges of disorderly conduct.

"Rivera was arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing for fleeing into a nearby middle school"

Poping off a round in the air gets you only disorderly conduct in MA? I think it's a felony in CA.

You obviously didn't grow up in that area. That is civilization there.

Interfering with a police officer arresting someone is disorderly conduct? Any LEOs out there who could clarify?

People in Massachusettes drown others in their Oldsmobile, and the only thing he got was a suspended license. People in Massachusettes get caught molesting a Congressional page boy, and they didn't even charge him with anything.

Both these stalwart citizens of the Bay State were and are continually re-elcted to their seats in Congress.

It is amazing that this cop even arrested this clown. The voters will probably elect the perp to the Governorship next term.

He dropped his gun. Hmmmmm.....

I am guessing it wasn`t his gun. Maybe stolen?

I wonder if they recovered the gun? Doesn`t say in the article.

If the gun was stolen, I would assume more charges would be coming.

( I am not anti-gun, just stunned they glossed over this in the article. That is rare to see in the media ).

Mayor Curley was elected (to the board of aldermen) while in jail, once.

The charge should have been, an undoubtedly was, Disturbung the Peace while Armed c269 s10

The reporter obviously missed the rest. And that would only be the on-view, first rank, arrestable offense. I can think a several more.

And these fellers are, in all likelihood, US citizens from PR.
