Posted on 09/05/2005 5:57:52 AM PDT by ken5050

Good morning, all you FReeper baseball fans. Trust everyone is having a pleasant Labor Day weekend. To those of you impacted by Katrina, our thoughts and prayers go out to you. But baseball is the ultimate escape, so let us turn our thoughts to the last month of the season, and the week that was..

Then you better hope the 'Stros win the WC..becuse if it comes from the N L EAST, then the Braves get SD in the first round, and the Pods are 5-1 against the Braves, and it looks like another early exit for you..

As long as they win the pennant I'm happy. LaRussa in past years has occasionally been outmanaged in the playoffs(Braves, Mets)or been victimized by life's bizarre twists. He did a fine job last year and the year of Darrel Kile's death.

If the Cards shared your opinion of Rentoria, he would still be here.
DH isn't a baseball player.
Most likely that would be Mabry or Sanders, why doesn't Ortiz play first? Can he handle the grounders?

LaRussa was largely a failure until last year because he had not won a pennant. Baseball isn't football, pennants mean something. Divisions, not so much.

Do you ping him every year when that happens?

Well, I hope so, too. The first year I lived in STL, the Rams went on that tear and won the Super Bowl. Its great to live in a World Champion's city. But this town is a baseball town, I can only imagine whatit will be like when they win the pennant!

They couldn't or wouldn't pay his price tag.

And it's "Renteria".

LaRussa did have some success in his previous job, if you think back a little.

We don't look at his previous job. Joe Torre has had much success in his subsequent job- neither has anything to do with their performance here. LaRussa was outmanaged by Bobby Cox in '96 and later by Valentine in the Mets' year. I'd rather split into 4 eight team leagues with no interleague play than continue the wild card system, so "post season" means little to me. Only the pennant has meaning.

No. As I stated in an earlier post, I'm a Cards fan. I don't denegrate other teams (except the Cubs, but thats a given). However I will react when someone pokes me.

We won the pennant last year, and have a very good chance again this year.

Wouldn't is the optimum word here. I was upset losing losing 3/5 of our infield last year but I got over it quickly after seeing the replacements play.

I thought I read somewhere here over the past months that the Yanks were out of it. How can it be that they might make the playoffs?

I concur. I don't like interleague and the wild card thing sort of grates on me. When did the NLB become the NFL? The logical extension is a format like NHL where they play all season to eliminate 2 teams.

I like the 4 team leagues with a lot of play within them. Truthfully I could care less about watching the Cards play AL teams during the season, and it creates inequalities in the schedule.

Joe IMO is pulling a salary. His only real success was as a catcher. I admit he has to put up with a lot of crap from Steinbrenner, but that's his choice, and for the money I'd do it too, but to label him as a successful manager is a stretch. Anyone could be as successful as Joe if they had an owner who would spend any amount of money for players.

I'm not a LaRussa fan, but it does show that at least LaRussa/Torre and others can win pennants and the world series given a good enough team or a little luck.

If they don't win them for your team perhaps it is your team (GM, players) who should get the blame, not hang it on the manager.
