Here's a link to a nice aerial image showing about 250 submerged school busses in New Orleans. The image is about 1.5 MB.

Let's see...250 busses with 60 people each in them...lordy, that's about 15,000 people that the City of New Orleans could have evacuated! Or did President Bush sneak in there and deflate all the tires before the hurricane?

Thats just ONE set of buses. Howlin posted this link last night to an additional set (lower right hand corner).

http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/storms/katrina/24426968.jpg

The important thing to remember is that these buses did not have to take thes people all the way to Texas, all they had to do was get them out of the N.O. swamp to higher ground. Each bus could have made 10 round trips in the time available, so thats more like 150,000 that could have been moved to higher ground and spread out around the area.

The buses are in the upper left portion of the image, you might have to scroll around in case you can't find them.

The mayor of New Orleans has complained that he did not have buses to evacuate his impoverished population, claimed it was the Federal Government's fault that these were not provided. HOWEVER, the city was in possession of at least 250 buses, which are now underwater.

As you can see from the image, they're polluting the water, too.

There is growing controversy about the deployment of evacuation buses in New Orleans. Evidence shows they were not deployed to help evacuate the needy. Further investigation from previous hurricanes shows that these buses are only deployed in NOLA AFTER the storms hit, not before. This appears to be that they want to save the buses and not want risk damage to them. This needs to be investigated as this policy has caused untold death in the past week.

Right. Good point.

Wow, that's about 100 more buses! So, at a conservative 50 passengers per bus, that would bring us to 17,500 refu...err...evacuees!

Although I think my buses look prettier than yours, Howlin!

It took a while to load, then did a shrink-to-fit for my screen, and I could still see them.

You know, that was the first shot I've actually really looked at in the way of structural damage in the area - wow, a lot of those houses really got ripped to pieces by the wind, then storm surge. Don't know if the remaining water is from the levee breaks or if that is just what is left from the spill over from the surge.

Will do. Obviously in this case they lost their buses completely, in addition to the thousands who died due to their neglect.

Actually its concievable that Howlins buses are not all buses, because zooming in on them seems to reveal that some are pickup trucks (lower row) and others appear to be flat bed trucks, This might be a freight yard full of yellow deliver vans. They seem more square than the buses in the other image.

Agreed. I think that the ones in the image I posted are all buses, and I looked around a bit to ensure that there is not a bus manufacturing company in New Orleans. Since I didn't find one, I think it's safe to assume that they are school buses which belong to the City of New Orleans.

Agreed. They started the evacuation about 24 hours before the hurricane hit. They probably only had to move the people a few miles to safety, so even ten trips might be a conservative estimate. Tragic neglect.
