Freeper Scooter Patrol?
08/31/05 | GRRRRR

Posted on 08/31/2005 6:34:40 PM PDT by GRRRRR

The wife says I am NOT allowed to get a 'scooter' just to use to get back and forth to work...

I've never been interested in the 'big & real" motorcycles, but...what's WRONG with getting a decent looking scooter?

They range in prices from $2,000 to $6,000 with 80 to 244cc engines and some interesting safety features like ABS brakes.

So, what's the FReeper take on gettin' on a scooter? Gay, Too Italian or sensible for urban conveyance??

Who's got one like these? Are you worried about cars & safety? What kind of mileage DO they get?

Not yet. But I've ripped a few front fork seals and my neck bearings "clink" every time I stop. :-)

WOW!!

To properly describe my first impression of that scooter I have to sing a song:

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose .....
(add a few lines here about bugs and we got a chart topper!!)

:-)

Birth inevitably leads to death. IMHO, we've gotten to a point where far too many people, even men, are afraid of risks. It's not a trend that I find admirable.

Well, obviously you took the time and trouble to see where the poster was posting from, and I did not. It wasn't the first time I spoke too soon, and I doubt it will be the last. I took basic in Great Lakes in Feb, so your point is dead on.

"And with a two-stroker don't forget to add the fuel-mixture oil."

Its easier than it used to be, most have oil injection now.

At least you're not asking about a pony cart.

The 60's Honda 50 scooters had big wheels. Rode almost the same as a motorcycle. The Vespas and the modern scooters mostly (afaik) have the small wheels, which to a bike rider accustomed to the big wheels, feel uncomfortable and even unsafe.

If you don't have to go over 35 MPH, get the 50cc models. They are registered and insured as mopeds and cost between 1K and 2K.

I bought a used Yamaha Zuma for $800 and it runs like a top.

Suzuki had oil injection in the 60's on its two stokes.

I had several ~ one street and two dirt.

Most bike dealers carry a scooter line. My buddy Rod the local Triumph dealer has several lines of scooters ~ some European and and some Asian.
